SECRETARY: Georqe Cartland, Esq., 22, Abingdon-street, Westminster, and Eton, Windsor, SOLICITORS : Messrs. Ashurst, Morris & Co., G, Old Jewry, E.C., London. PROSPECTUS : The Directors of this Company have succeeded in purchasing the Freehold of two Valuable Tracts of Land in the Wharekawa District, Province of Auckland. The extent of the property is 12.350 acres or 19£ th square miles, and, as will be seen from Plan, its lower extremity extend to within 31 miles of Pukorokoro (a navigable creek on the Frith of Thames) opposite tho Goldfields and Townships of Shortland, Grahamstown, Hastings, and Coromandel, being distant from the two first-mentioned towns only about ten miles. The Company has for its object the developing to the greatest possible advantage the Coal and other Minerals known to exist thereon, as also the construction and using of a Rail or Tramway in the vicinity thereof. COAL. The very valuable seam, cropping out in the creek at the Surrey Redoubt, has been proved to be 10 feet in thickness, and has been traccd for a considerable distance through the property, and from its position can be easily and economically worked, and tho supply is limited only by tho demand. A small parcel wa3 forwarded to the " Ilauraki" Battery, Grahamstown, to be tested, and the report of the engineer is appended. The consumption of Coal for quartz-crushing machinery, and other purposes, in the Province of Auckland, at present amount* to about 100,000 tons yearly, and is largely on the increase owing to the continued erection of fresh quartz-crushing batteries, steam communication, projected railways throughout the Province, as, also, its rapidly increasing populations. This Company, from the close proximity of their property to the markets, will be able to supply coal at a very low figure, and may, therefore, reasonably calculate on obtaining a fair share of the trade of the Thames District, n.s well as of the Auckland and coasting trade, besides which they will have the great advantage of having a large market of skilled mining labour close at hand.

Kepnrt of the Engineer of the Hanraki Buttery, at Grahamstown, on Sample of "NVharekawa (Surface} Coal, 11th February, liiTO: -"Nine cwt. Coal, ;">! hour.? pood .steam for batten*, 7 head .stampers. A better Coal than "Whungarei; no sulphur; no clinkers ; burns quick and fierce." J. Lowe. C.R, reports as follows:— extent: "I am fully convinced that the Coal extends over most of the Company's ground, and that at least 7,000 to S.OOO acres will be a good workable Coalfield. From the appearance of the ea<<y dip of the Coal Seam at the outcrop (although not opened out sufficiently to arrive at a correct estimate of the greatest depth at which it will be found), and from past cxpeiienec of Coalfields in Lancashire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, in England, during apei iod of about thirty years, I consider that the Coal should not be very deep, even in the centre of the J«a.sin. QUA MTV : " The Coal is very goo>d at the outcrop, being much better than I expected at the surface, and will, no doubt, improve in finality and thickness as it goes down. The seam at the point from which the present sample is taken is about ten feet thick. It is more than usually strong ami compact at the outcrop, and in comparison with the Kawakawa Coal is much superior to it, as taken from the present workings at a depth of one hundied and twenty-eight feet. The Coal is similar to the Wishaw Coal of Scotland, and the filaujjohle of Germany, and contains about seventy-live per cent, of combustible matter. The amount of Sulphur contained in this Coal being very small makes it very suitable for Smelting and Kngine purposes, and it will also be useful as a good household Coal. IKONSTOSB : " Ironstone has bf« n found on the surface, and from tests yields about .*0 per cent, of Tron, and there can scarcely be a doubt but that Jronband will be found overlapping the Coal measures. ltmkktonk : " Limestone is found on the surface of the Block, and is apparently in large quantities-. A valuable llnx for Iron is thus at hand, and it will be also available for building and agricultural purposes. TIMUKK : "The !Jlock is well timbered with K iuri, Totara, and other ns-fnl Forest Trees extending to some liuudreds of acres. QUALITY OF LAJCO : " The Land, except where marked on the Plan as hilly, is of fairavcracc quality, and will be available for agricultural purposes. The swampy parts beiug easily drained will form the richest portions. FLAX : " There is an extensive Flax field on the grouud. The Flax is cf the finest quality. "Wati"it rowKii: " The Mangatangi (a valuable stream} runs across the Company's land, having a considerable declivity, and 1 estimate that in the dry season there is a body of water flowing of about fifteen millions of gallons per diem. (Signed) " John* Lowe, C.E. After careful calculations, the Directors are fully assured that the ooalfrom this mine can be delivered at the Thames for 12s. or 13s. per ton, whereas the market value will be at least £1 per ton. The Government main line of road and telegraph wires run the entire length of the propeity, and the latter is now completed as far os l'ukorokoro 'proposed site of the Miranda Township), and across the Frith of Thames to the goldttolds. KAILWAY. The Company purposes to construct a Railway 1 from the coal mine to the landing-place at Miranda 'l'ukorokoro, opposite to Grahamstown,} for the conveyance of their coal to the shipping. This Kail or Tramway bas been accurately surveyed, and found to be nine miles in length, without any serious engineerng ditliculties to contend orith. P,y the extension of this line about nine miles further to Mercer, or five to the waters of the Walkato, would open up one of the finest districts in the North Island of New Zealand, the farm produce and local industries made available, and brought into direct communication with two great centres of popuation iu the province, viz., Auckland and Grahams--1 own and the Thames and Coromandel Goldfields. I GENERAL. j The Directors eventually purpose laying out about 0,000 acres—not required for coal, timber, or flax—in small farms, in order to encourage bona fide settlement on the laud; and, apart from the carriage of their own coal and timber, the Directors fairly anticipate a considerable traffic from their own and the surrounding settlers. The Company also purpose to lay out a Township at the mines, which will form a terminus and depot, and which will be laid off in allotments and otfered to public competition, the Company retaining all Minerals and rights to mine throughout the property. The Directors believing that large profits will arise from the development of this Estate, have privately taken up Shares to the value of £25.000. Prospectuses, Reports from .Mining and other Engineers, with estimated cost of Hallway, Aa, together with forms of applications for Shares, f-.nd any fnrther information required, can be procured on application to the General Manager, at the Company's Office, Vaile's Buildings, Auckland. Where no allotment is made, the deposits will he returned in full, and iu some cases where a smaller number of Shares is allotted than applied for, the extra deposit monpy will be appropriated towards the sum due on allotment. Applications for Shares in the annexed form, accompanied by a remittance of «£l per Shave, niay be made to the Bankers or the General Manriger. W. A. Git A HAM, Vaile's Buildings. "XTEW ZKALAND I.A.N D AND COAL _13l COMPANY (LIMITED. 1 . The Share List will foe close<l 011 the 31st July, 1873. Applications received before that date will have precedence in allotment. By order of the Directors. GRAHAM , Manager.
