THE FIJIAN SERVICE.

THE 8.8. STAB OP THE SOUTH, looked P 'J'f n Service, which has been for some time 'on„with,P°^i.ic0 n „ with ,P°^i.icr a ble interest Ist pr«imo a D d tl ' WlU a —once on the which has been subsidised, /ately b^' waa the want of any regular communication between this place and Levuka. It i 8 ttu that vessels leave here now and again but their return in always a matter of uncertainty as there are so many inducements hekl out to small vessels to slay in these waters partipalar'v in the mutter of the "

bour trade," as it is termod. But now, with ii regularly subsidised steamer, which will make one trip a month, and which has excellent ac u" modation for passengers, we may hope to see much closer relations spriDg up between New Zealand and Fiji than have hitherto prevailed, l'he Star of the South, which will make the passage in about six daysi, has had an excellent saloon placed on the deck, amidships—something similar to that in the s.s. Rowena, but considerably larger, it being 26 feet long by 22 feet wide, and is well lighted from abovr, while it has an unusually large number of ports around it. It is fitted up with cushioned seals, and these aro converted into beds at ni<*ht-time. There is sleeping accommodation for twelve males in this cabin. Adjoining is a lavatory and a shower-batli, captain's cabin, pantry, &c. The ladies' cabin is 16 feet by 10 feet, and has sleeping accommodation for six. Tho whole of the saloon is neatly and ta-t .-fully fitted up with mahogany aud has a very light and airy appearance, while it is at the same time snug and commodious. Tho companion is large and conveniently situated. The hurricane deck above oilers facilities for a pleasant promenade. Tho old engines have been thoroughly overhauled by Mesers. Praser and Tiune, who have the contract for the entiro repairs of the vessel. The carpentering work has been done by tho shipwrights, who have added to the houso accommodation on deck aft. The old cabin will be used for second-class passengers, so ihut it will be seen that the passenger accoinm lutiou is fully ample for any trade that is llike'y to spring up for somo little time at least. Mr. Ward, of "Wellesley-street, has received tho contract for painting, and has done iv great deal of graining work besides. The whole of the bulwarks on the inside have been grained fore and aft a light oak colour, which gives it a very pleasing appearance. Messrs. Cranwell and Co. are the contractors for the upholstering, fitting, &c. Tho late baii weather has delayed the work a good deal, but the boat will nevertheless be ready by tho time appointed. It is Baid that the hands will be shipped to-morrow, and in all probability tho

will make a trial trip to the Bay of Ir'.uuds, before taking up the Fijian service. We wish the Star of the South every success in her new trade.
