Till! anniversary of the Hope of Auckland Tent c-f the order of Reehabites was celebrated last evening by a tea and public meeting, in the Young Men's Christian Association. The former having been satisfactorily disposed of, a short interval was allowed to elapse, and the business of the meeting was tlien commenced. Mr. Leßov touk the chair, and after a short opening address, called upon Mr. J M. French to rem! the report, from which we gather that the Hope of Auckland Tent—the tirst in New Zealand, —was opened on the 11th of Mar, IS<53. This Tent has now to the credit of its fuueral fund, £21S 1G? 2d. There are now twelve branch Tents in existence, numbering over 40U members. The committee also urged the necessity of forming Juvenile Tents in tho city, and expressed their willingness to tiive everv Assistance for the attainment of that object. The doctor's report, which c miplimented I he society on theexcellcnt healihofits members, was also included. The adoption of the report was proposed by Colonel lluultiiin, and carried.— The Kev. Samuel lidger, 13.A., then proposed, seconded by Dr. J. R. Nicholson, M.P.C., ''That iu consequence of misconception of the abuse and use ot intoxicating drink being such a fearful cause of untold suijering and crime ; and as it is impo-.-ibie lor benevolent, rational menexcept. iro:n misco —to permit srich untold sulleriiig uud crime resulting frohi the abuse and use of intoxicating drink; therefore this meeting pledges itself to assist in every legitimate manner to disseminate the principles of total abstinence from all intoxicating drink, and likewise declares the necessity of providing an hospital for confirmed inebriates, the whole expense to be a charge upon the public-houses and their auxiliaries " Carried unanimously. — Proposed by Bro. William Speight, 1'.C.11., seconded by Bro. J. C. Wilkes : — " In consequence of the independent Order of Reehabites being a benefit society, established upon the principles of abstinence from all intoxicating liquors; and as this benefit society, lor the small contribution of Is per week, provides for its members 15s per week, in sieknesi, and mediea: attendance for themselves and imiiilies, likewise a funeral gift of £2 I ; and as it ia also a fact that cannot be overthrown, that the principles of thiß society tend to promote health, happiness, and long life ; therefore this meeting pledges itself to a--sisL ail in its power to increase the number of the Independent Order of Reehe-bites." Carried. —Several recitations were given in an oxeellent. manner, and altogether the proceedings were very o-ccesstul, a very large number of persons bring preruut. The recitation of Mr. Jenkins :n-.y be especially mentioned as being very eflective.
