HEAVY GALE AT COROMANDEL.
Tiie district was on Monday and Tuesday visited with one of the heaviest gales we hate had for a long time, and a great deil of damage has been done. It commenced to blow on Monday morning, and in the course of the daj increased to a perfect gale. The spray was carried across the harbour in dense cloud.-, so as to interrupt the view of the adjoining headlands. The force of the wind was so that it was impossible to stand again;t it. The Royal Alfred arrived at about five o'clock, and made several attempts to land her pas:engers, but the boats were not able to stand up against the fury of the gale, and had to pu buck to the steamer, and there they had W remain until Tuesday afternoon, before tWJ" could get ashore. A great deal of injury y 63 done to the various dwellings throughout district. On the Tokatea Hill a great ma'-"? whares were bJown down, and on the XJp(>er Township a house in which Mr. Riley, trar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, reside*', had the roof blown off, and a large quantity 01 oo'ods damaged by the rain, which leh , I all the time. At the Lower Township, ,!ief . r °, U „ of Mr. Richard's house was blown out, and front of Mr. Gibb's store narrowly shared tj> same fate.
