We observe by advertisements that Mr. H. W. Dyeon, so long and favourably known in the drapery trade, is about to relinquish the business, and consequent upon the expiration of his lease will, for the remainder of tho term, hold an unusually cheap sale, and solicits an early call to secure bargains.—[Advt.] Extempore Speaking-. — Mr. Winterbotham, M.P., while presiding at the meeting of a debating society, a few days ago, spoke at some length of the shortcomings and advantages of such institutions. He recommended no person to speak without preparation, and stated that when he first addressed his conslituents, ho had tho commencing six sentences off by heart. During their delivery his head was spinning round, but by the time he got to the sixth sentence he was composed, and felt nodiffieulty in addressing tho audience. He advised every speaker to be earnest, and say what he really thought, to connect his ideas in a logical manner, and to be careful that the language in which he clothed them was not capable of misapprehension. Mr. Winterbotham, says a contemporary, might also have added that the young men who attend debating societies aro too impatient to become orators. They forget the advice of the great Athenian, and are discouraged because tbey do not succeed well at first. The ancient rhetoricians held that the oratorical faculty could not attain its full developement and influence, until hoary hairs had added the venerableneas of age to the other accomplishments of lUj speaker.
