AUCKLAND TO NAPIER, OVERLAND.
Tue übiquitous Mr. Locke arrived from tha Wnikato via Auckland, cu route for Napier, after having succeeded most successfully (for thoro is nothing so successful as success) in solving tho knotty problem of opening an inland road by Cambridge and Taupo, so as eventually to connect Auckland with Hawke's Bay. Setting aside the social and commercial interests involved, the; political aspect of thing;", so far as relates to our diflieulties wish the natives, will Le materially brightened. Iho aulcnli which tho Ngaliraukawa, as a turbulent tvibe, put upon this road has, by this f*ontlonian's influence, been removed. Of course, much remains yet to be done, but it is assuring to know that tho inimical attitude ol so powerful a section of natives inland has been toned down, to say no more, to an acknowledgment of the blessings of peace. Mr. Locke is somewhat confident of even further success in this direction ; and I believe that your enterprising firm, Messrs. Quick, can take courage now, and proceed on their long promised way rejoicing. From what I learn, even this achievement does not settle tho overland postal difficulty, and you will have to wait, st ill further tho goodness of tho gods. As the Defence Minister entertained grave doubts as to tho possibility of anyone, save himself, encountering these tribes and surviving, I would suggest, i hat Mr. Locke's next mission ho to his Arch-Highness To Hira, and his accomplished sister Princess Sophia, and let, him try his hand aL tho Ohineiuuri u'l'air.— [Poverty Bay Correspondent.]
