HEAPHY, i i-i.-.j -r. ■: V.C. i •- ■>' V.- ....... ■ JAMES COOK, tlio celebrated navigator,. " was. tlie first -European ; who sot foot .on : 'New Zetilund; lie landed' on the: cist: isidd- of |Turanganiri : Rivcr, in Poverty Bay; Bth Octo'bcr, 1769 r thence ; he sailed' ilong tlio East 'Coast, across the: Bay of . Plenty, round Capo 'Colville, up the Gulf and River Thames; then 'north, round North. Cape, along the West i Coast, through Cook Strait, to Queen Charlotte's Sound. He then sailed through the, ; Strait, along tho East Coast of the Middle Island, round the South Cape, and returned 'along the "West Coast' to Queen Charlotte's Sound again. Captain Cook left New Zealand on 31st March, 1770, having spent six months ■on the coast •; but although he re-visite'd'tbe TEBKA AUSTRALIS INCOGNITA four times, it was only during the first visit that he sailed all round and described the country—its inhabitants and productions. It is now one hundred years since Captain Cook landed and took possession of these Islands, yet not one of the many elaborate and voluminous accounts of the country and its inhabitants that have been published can be compared to that which he wrote ; in fact the best subsequent works are but supplementary to his simple yet compendious and accurate description. - The forthcoming publication has been compiled from the earliest edition of "Cook's Voyngos,"—the narrative being transcribed verbatim—explained and amplified by notes and appendixes, bringing to bear the observations and; experiences of the principal writers and travellers of more recent times. Such an account of the changes in the country, physically and politically, that have taken place during the past century cannot fail to be most interesting to the lovers of sciencc and history, and it is hoped may also assist'in recording the customs of a race that is. fast. diminishing, and which has already lost many of its peculiar characteristics. The several placcs of which Cook gave illustrations will be shown by photographs or d awings. Tlie work, which is into- del to form a Jirst-elass gift book, will be edited, illustrated, "printed,' and bound in Auckland... Price, to Subscribers before publication, 10s. 6d.
