Our correspondence columns being open to all, xve do not hold ourselves responsible for any opinions expressed therein. Correspondents are requested to write only on one side of the

| paper, and, to prevent mistakes, they should write aa legibly I as possible WAIKAm—A MAW DROWNED, &a To the Editor of the Hbbald. Sib,—lt ib with deep regrat that I beg to acquaint you of an accident that occurred to-day (Saturday), the 3rd instant, as the Bteamer Waipa was on her up trip from Point Russell to Ngaruawahia. The day being very rough, it appears that tho Bteamer's dingy got full of water, upon which the man in charge ordered a man of tho name of Stephens to go into tho boat to bail her out. He accordingly did so, but it was so rough that the poor fellow was washed out of the little boat, and met with a watery grave. Now, why could not the boat be pulled on board tho steamer, instead of sending a man overboard to bail it out while the steamer waa running full speed with a fair wind. This is one of the very many accidents that have occurred through the medium of incompetent men being allowod to take command of steamers ; and every one knows that the Dresent master (ex steward) ia not a qualified master, but yet tho owners of "Waikato Bteamers have one consolation left, that they can always gull the Government Inspector.—Yours, &c., FAIB PLi.T. Ootober 3rd, 1868.
