AUCKLAND INSTITUTE.

The usual monthly meeting of the Auckland Institute was held lass night lit the Museum, Princes street —Frederick Whitaker, Esq., president, in the chair. Various additions "were made to the colleo* tion of the Inetitute and Museum. The principal part of the business of the evening was in reference to the water of the hot springs in various parts of the province, and to saving gold from Thames quartz. It was suggested that samples of the water should be obtained, and sent to Dr. Hector for analysis. Several modes of extracting gold in use in various countries were referred to, and the opinion very generally held was that something like one-half of tha gold in the Thames quartz was lost through defective methods and defective machinery, and the principal way of meeting this difficulty was said to be forming companies with a large extent of ground held by them oa lease. These could then obtain first class machinary to crush thair own stufjj instead of sending it to a hired machine, and could experimentalise as to methods.

The meeting last night was the last of tho session. Dr. Hochstetter was unanimously elected the first honorary member of the Institute, various members testifying to the skill and ability of Dr. Hochstetter, and Ilia great interest in Now Zealand.
