Tho number of nrrivals from foreign and intercolonial ports during the past monrh show c marked improvement in ths shipping tnid« of thii port, and '11:19 given to our wharf and harbour mi appearance nf activity and which could scarcely huve been expected. This wonderful change, there can be no doubr, is attributablo to the rapid development of the Thames gnldfield. At t/.e preEeut moment w. h-tva nine steamer* and a larire 'fleet of Biiihi!* craft profitably employed between this port and tho 'lliames, and in a few dava two niore fine 6te>(mtrs will fco added to the list, namely, tho Ldluh :tnd the Go-ahead. No less than siren of these have been buiifc in the province, the others Laving been taken off the West Coast trade and si-p.t up here. F'nm the above table it will be sreti that twelve ve;sel? have arrived here Irom foie ; !.:n ports during 'he month. The most important of those is the magnificent s.s. Hero, which has been placed in the trade between Sydney and Auckland for a few months as an experiment. In addition to t.ho above we had more than the usual number of stop.mers from the Southern ports, all of which have brought a large number of diggers, and full cargoes of general merchandise. Wo have also had seven arrivals from Oyttleton, and oao from Dunedin, with strain, namely:—The Dunedin, Ellesmero, Cleopatra, J. B. Kussell, Queen. Glengarry, Canterbury, and .Tane. These vessels have brought 791 sacks, and 455 ba»s hariey : 1950 bags 200 sacks oats; 1630 b gs, and 24,06 sacks wheat; 153 bags, 2 Bucks, and 2 tone »harps ; 25 tons, 446 hags, and 694 sacks flour; 91 sacks bran; and 40 bags oatmeal. *■ he Kauri, with 113 sacks oata. from Wellington; the Lady Don, with 1000 sacks oats, from Timaru ; and the Duguiar, with 659 bugs oats from Dunedin, have all eiiied for this port, and may be expected hourly.

A large "number of vessels are now engaged trading between the Bay of 7slands, Wangarei, and this port; and in addition to the liuve quantity of coals forwarded direct from the mines to the l'hame* goldfield, we have received 1136 tons of coals from the mines, and about 150

tons from WftDgarei. Beveral of the small which have arrived from the South sro profitably engaged transporting timber from the various mills on the coast, to Auckland and the "Thames. Msewhere will ho found an account of tho totil loss of the fine s.s. Taranaki, belonging to the £i.Z 3.N. Company. The vessel was wrecked on a reefiri Queen Charlotte Sound, and was not insuri-d. The whole of tho passengers and crew wero saved ; as also the Panama mail for Auckland, which was on board at the time. Thero can be but little doubt that tho schooner Percy, a vessel which recently arrived here from l.yttleton, has foundered at sea whilst on her p:is-p!i-To from tho Bay of Islands to this port with a " cargo of coals, .'-liorily aitor this vossel sailed from the Bay a very heavy galo was experienced on the coast, and the Percy being heavily lauen, sho is supposed to have foundered in the rk'o. No tidings have boeu received of »he missing cutters Betsey and Dolphin, both o: which are now given up for lost. 1 lie Missionary schooner Southern Cross s-.ilo:i for Norfolk Island yesteniay, and is expected ta return here in a fow. weeks with Jiiahop Patteson.
