Jones was charged with stealing from Messrs. Keesing, Potisch and Keeeing'e shop shop two pair of tweed trou»ere, value thirty shillings. He pleaded gulty, but said he hod had nothing to eat and took them to raise a nyral. — Ordered to be imprisoned for four months in the common gaol of Au.kland and kept to hard labour. I reeiio in Chancery-st. und keep a email shop; I buy and sell clothing. Last Saturday night I went to bod about 11 o'clook. Before going t > b-d I locked the doors and secured fcbe windows. The following morning I got up at aeren o'clock ; I found tho back door open and two panel of glas< broken in tho baok window. I then examined my house nnd found that a quantity of clothing was miseing besides other articles. I missed two silk shawls, value £2 ; a eilk dreae, £2 ; a paisley ehnwl, 10s; a light ehawl, ss; a plaid shawl, 10s ; 5 yards long cloth, 2i 6d ; 3 white petticoats, 9s; 2J- yards check muelia, 2s ; 3 chemises, 7s G& ; a night wrapper, 2a 6d; 2 black silk handkerchief!, -4»; 1 black waistcoat, Bβ; 1 light print droei, 3s ; 1 block ooat, 8s; 2 yards black print, Is 6d; 2J yards print, Is Sd ; 2£ yards plaid, sa; 6 boxei sardines, Sa ; 2 red silk handkerchiefs, 4s Sd; muslia cupe, Iβ 6d; 1 black velvot capo, 2e; 1 childs' robe, Is; 1 flinnel ahirt, Is 6d ; 1 pocket-nandkorchiof, talue 4d, with a sovereign tied iu the corner; and Elbe, candles, Iβ 6d. The articles produced are my property and tho same that were taken from my shop. Oross-oxamined by prisoner: I could not say whether the thing» were in my house when I went to bed. I did not examine the Prisoner : I am chargod with breaking into the house your Worship after sha went to bed.—Hia Worship : You are charged with burglary. If that ie not proved it will be struck out. Cross-examination continued : My door was open till 9 o'clock on Saturday nifjht. I was not drunk. —Prisoner : I don't disown taking the things producod out of the house, but I was drunk. I did not take the other things.—Mary Dunmoro, wifo of Joseph Dunmore, residing in Barrack-etroot, deposed : I saw the prisoner in Q.ueen-street on Saturday night last between 8 and 9 o'ebek. He called mo on one side and pulled the shawl now produced out of his bosom, and asked me to pawn it (or him for four shillings. I pawned it for half-a-crown, which I gave , to prisoner. Detective Ternahan spoke to mo about the shawl, and I went and released it and gave it to him. —William Hart, deposed: On Sunday morning last prisoner canio to my house in Chancery-street. He had a email bundle witli him. The bundle contained a piece of print and a petticoat. He asked me to buy them. I gave him a shilling and a feed for them.—Tho prisoner hero pleaded guilty to tho larceny, but not to the burglary.—Hii Worship said there clearly was no barglary, as the things were taken before nine o'clock in the evening. —Mr. Naughton asked for a further remand until Saturday, before sentence was pronounced, to givo the police further opportunity for recovering the remainder of th<! property. Remanded accordingly. This concluded the business.
