GAS COMPANY.

The half-yearly meeting of the Gas Company was he'd "yesterday afternoon at three o'clock, at the office of the company, a report of which appears elsewhere. The report upon the whole is very favourable, considering the state of the times" and the confusion arising from the irregular method pursued of collecting the company's f.cnou'jts, and the defalcations of the late collector, Cotterel. We understand that a new and more business-like method of carrying on the undertaking will henceforward be pursued, as we see by advertisement that the services of a competent book-keeper have been called for, and we also understand that the account will in future be rendered monthly, aud the price of the gas reduced to 17s. 6d. per 1000 feet to those punctually paying for it. It would also appear that all receipts given in future will be in a special printed form prescribed by the Company, and consecutively numbered, the late collector haviEg been enabled to embezzle the funds of the Company by giving receipts in writing on ordinary paper.
