THE KARAKA GOLD-FIELD.
(PBOII OUJJ SPECIAL COBBESPONBENT.) Shortland, January 29, 1868 T}p to yesterday (Tuesday) morning the crushing at Hunt's had yielded 1400 (fourteen hundred) ounces of retorted gold. I have visited a large number of claims within the last two or three days, but fatigue, and the pressure of other business, have prevented me writing up my account. I think, however, that on the whole the , prospects of this field are even more satisfactory than they were. The various reports which reach me from the Tapu Creek are much better than I had anticipated. On Monday night late news reached here of a second one pound weight nugget, and of a new find in reefs.
I append reports of the Magistrate's- and Warden's Courts, which sat for several hour 3 yesterday. In connection with this matter 1 am sorry to learn that we are likely to lose Mr. Mackay. Ido not know what gTound there is for the supposition, but it is thought that he is about to relinquish the active part be has taken hitherto. If this he so, it will be a great loss to us.
