WAIUKU.

(FROM ODB. OWN COSKESrONBEST ) January 21. In my communication fo you of the 16th, I stated that the school teacher had resigned beeause tile committee could not guarantee a certain sum per annum as a salary. Since then, principally owing to the exertions "of the Kev. A. B. Arnot, an arrangement has been made by which Mr. Worthington vriU be enabled to continue his duties, and at a committee meeting held yesterdey, he was re-appointed teacher of tlie school, and work has heen commenced thie day. It is hoped that settlers will show their appreciation of Mr. Arnot's exertions in their behalf by sending their children regularly to the school, and they fhould also remember that as the teacher's income is now chiefly made up from feea, the onlyway to eecure liia position is to eend all the children who are of an age to attend school. I notice in the isaue of tho Cross of Saturday that the residents of Waiuku are accused of poisoning pheasants, but Ba far as my knowledge goes, I can most conscientiously contradict it. 1 have heen in several parts of the district lately, and have never heard of the matter. Indeed, everyone to whom I have spoken about it learnt it first from the paragraph referred to. It is probable that the majority of the settlers of Waiuku cannot be aware that tho fence3_at the cemetery are in a very dilapidated condition. I should think if a little combined action were taken, not only could the fences be ropaired hut the enclosure might be decently laid down in grass and made to look respectable and worthy of the place. It is true., and very forrunate, that the burial ground is very seldom ueed there having been only two adults buried thsre hclonging to Waiuku proper during the last twenty months ; but as it is public property, and every one some day or other expects to get his share of it, it, is only proper that the duty of putting the place in decent order ehouU he divided among the whole of the community. Since mooting this matter it has been suggested that some should give labour and others inateiial, and a day appointed when all should meet and proceed with whatever is necessary. The next parade of the Cavalry Volunteers is fired for the Ist proximo. January 22. To-day a match of cricket was played on "Messrs. Famlin's ground between the Waiuku East and Mauku Clubs, -which resulted in an easy victory to the former in ono innings. The bowling on the part of the Waiuku Club was remarkably good, and contributed very largely to gain the match. I append the ecore : — WAITJKtr TCA3T CLUB. Ist nrariKGS. Green, b Fenton 16 0.
