The Phcefce arrived iu the Manukau yesterday, bringing Australian and Southern files. The telegrams and principal items of news will be found elsewhere.
The Duke of Edinburgh had been enjoying himself thoroughly in Melbourne and neighbourhood. He was to leave Melbourne for Tasmania on the -ith instant. After Lie had left, the elections were to take place, and it was anticipated that there would be very great excitement while they continued. The Supreme Court decided on a recent trial, that the Government had no right to pay sums to persons suing it until a proper Appropriation Act had been passed. Grain was rising in value. Particulars will be found in our market reports. From Sydney we learn that Sir John Young had been presented with a beautiful silver vase ; figures of Fame, with outstretched arms, carrving the Civic Crown, forming the haudles, and" the escutcheon on the vase bearing a suitable inscription. Sir John and Lady Young left in the Geelong. Major-General Sir Trevor Chute was sworn in at Government House as administrator of the Government pending the arrival of the new Governor, Lord Belmoie.
Sir John and lady Young left with tho good wishes of the entire community, after administering the affairs of the colony for nearly seven years. Puller reports of Australian news will be found in. other columns.
