Correspondence.
To the Editor of the New Zealand Heeat.d,
Sib, —I observe in your co-temporary's issue of this morning some very impotant remarks from the late discarded gaoler relative to the sayings of Mr. Dignan in the Provincial Council in connection'pith the"prison management. Let Mr..Dignan give himself no concern about such silly cgotistio trash ; it is quite worthy of the individual, and only tends to confirm everything that has been said of him by the committee of inquiry by the want of judgment and discretion. If Mr. Dignan, or any other person, is deßirous of knowing the state of Mount Kden Gaol, au individual, who was lately a prisoner in that establishment, and who si 'word, to say the least of it, is equal to Mr.Tuckwell's, will call upon them, and from him they will learn that it is impossible "to enter that gaol without observing the marked improvement in every department there. The warders seem to have an'intereat in their work'. The prisoners receive their orders in a firm and becoming manner and must obey them, even thoee who commit themselves seldom grumble when punished, as they can see that it is e-11 face to face work. This is what may be properly-called gaol discipline. Then, with regaid to his last paragraph, is it not surprising how far some weak minded people will carry their spleen without being conscious that in so. doing they are rendering themselves contemptible, and even go so far, as in this instance, fo offer suggestions on matters where their opinions are looked upon as utterly worthYours, &c., June 28,1867. Gxo.
