MOUNT ALBERT HIGHWAYS DISTRICT.

The ratepayers in the above district assembled at the school room, Whau road, yesterday afternoon, for important business, but there being only about twenty persons present, the meeting adjourned, after hearing the report of the deputation appointed at the last meeting to wait upon his Honor the Superintendent. Dr. Aickin, who occupied the chair, said that he thought it necessary to make a few remarks. The severity of the weather had no doubt detained many from being present, and as it was necessary that every ratepayer should attend, it would be desirable to adjourn the meeting. He had been conversing with several geatlemen conversant with the wants of the district, and was of opinion that the present proposal was not at all acceptable to the inhabitants who were residing within the Whau disMr. T. B. Hilx. said some three weeks had elapsed since their last meeting. At that meeting a deputation was appointed to wait upon his Honor the Superintendent, and on Wednesday last, the 26th instant, the deputation, consisting of Messrs. Mears, Gribble, and himself, waited upon his Honor the Superintendent respecting the Mount Albert highway district. They were received in a most cordial manner by his Honor, who most willißgly afforded them

the fullest information lie was able, and informed them that the district had been legally proclaimed. He also informed them that Major Heaphy was at present engaged in laying out the province into highway districts, and that he (Major Heaphy) would be happy to receive any suggestions regarding the laying out of the same. His Honor was of opinion that the districts should be as well defined as possible, as well as, in many instances, much more extended in area than at present, and at liis Honor's suggestion the deputation went to the Land Office for the purpose of seeing Major Heaphy, and the proposed plan of the Mount Albert district. Major Heaphy was riot in, but Mr. Tole very kiudly afforded them every information they required, as well as furnished them with a descriptive plan of the same, and which your deputation would now submit to the meeting for your approval. His Honor also informed the deputation that he had no power to remove the toll gate ; it rested with the Provincial Council. The Chaibjian said he would take the liberty of remarking that the map was imperfect. The southern and eastern boundaries were not properly defined. Mr. T. 33. Hill then moved that a deputation from this meeting wait upon Major Heaphy for the purpose of getting plans and every information that was requisite. The motion was seconded by Mr. Gribble, and carried. Mr. T. B. Hill proposed that au advertisement should be inserted in the L vo daily and weekly papeis, describing as nearly possible the proposed boundaries. The meeting then adjourned until four o'clock next Wednesday, when every ratepayer in the above district is requested to attend.
