NORTHERN DIVISION ELECTION.
The poll for the election of a candidate to represent tlie district of the Northern Division in the Provincial Council, took place yesterday, the principal polling placc being the Pilot Station, ]North Shore. It will be remembered that at the nomination the result of the show of hands was for Mr. Hurst, 9 ; for Mr. Staines, 9, and for Mr. it. Dacre, 5. Mr. Hurst's retirement lrom the contest left the issue between Messrs. Staines and Dacre, and the result, so far as can bo ascertained, from the present state of the poll is exactly what might have been expected, looking at the fact that while Mr. Staines is a town resident, and comparatively but little acquainted with the wants and requirements of the out-districts, Mr. Henry Dacre is a bona Jidc settler, and intimately acquainted with the interests of the country districts. However the contest has been carried with a spirit of fairness and moderation, and Mr. Staines has no cause to feel mortilied at the result of the poll of yesterday, The poll closed at the Pilot Station with tlie following result: — Mr. H. Dacre . . . .52 Mr. Gr. Staines . . . .35 Majority for Mr, Dacre . . 17
Mr. Staines headed the poll until 2 o'clock in tlie afternoon, when the arrival of a body of Mr. Dacre's supporters placed tho preponderance in his favor. The result of the poll in tho outdistricts has not yet come in, but the majority is expected to be unmistakeably on the side of Mr. H. Dacre.
