NORTHERN ASSURANCE COMPANY. ' FIRE AND LIFE. ESTABLISHED 1836. CAPITAL, £2,000,000. RESERVE FUND, £SOO.OOO. FIRE DJPABIMEKT. INSURANCES against fire aro effected on nearly every description of property at current rates of premium, and losses promptly settled. LIFE DEPARTMENT. Tho rates charged in Australia nre tho same r.B those in England, being calculated on tho lutoßt data of mortality th<ro, and will bo fouud peculiarly farourable to Assurors. Tho Life liusinejs is divided into two distinct Branches 1. THE NON-PARTICIPATION' BRANCH, tho Assured in which receive no additions to their Policies; the promiums being calculated on the lowest scale consistent with safetv ; and 2. THE PARTICIPATION BRANCH, in which the wholo profits, less a fixed percentage of tho premiums, for management and guarantee of tho sums assured, belong to tho Policy-holders ; and, in reckoning those profits, tho Company is, under its new Act of Parliament (lS65)i precluded from deducting anything beyond whit is actually paid away as commission to agents. The necessity felt by all purely Mutual Societies of setting aside a portion of their profits to form a guarantee fund is in this way avoided, and at the same time that economy which is tho boast of the mutual system is ensured. Policies can be surrendered after they have boen three years in duration, either (1) for their equitable cash, value: or (2) a policy will be issued, free of future premiums, for a sum equivalent to sucli value ; or (3) a portion of tlio policy can be surrendered, and the Assurance continued for the reduced amount, allowance being made for the premiums already paid. Policy-holders, in erent of removal, can pay their renewal premiums a* any of tho Company's ofiices or Agencies at home or abroad. Loans.—Loans aro granted on deposit of tho Company's Policies to tho extent of their acquired value, free of legal expense to the borrower, the rate of interest charged being six per cent per annum. The last Bonus declared by tho Company (in 1865) was at the rate of £1 7s. 6i. per cent per annum on tlie amount insured—a return which has been very rarely exceeded by any office, when the moderat rates of this Company are taken into account. Forms of proposals and every information can bo obtained at the office of the undersigned. THOMAS MACKY, Queen-street, Agent for the Provinco of Auckland. "WHAT IS LIFE ASSURANCE ? 1. It is the exercise of prudence—or benevolence. 2. It secures independence—domestic happiness to the widow and orphan. 3. It is more efficacious in its operation, as regards the moral and domestic comfort of the people, and in it.> tendency to reduce taxation, by its reduction of pauperism, and possibly of crime, than the legislation ot onr wisest statesmen, and if universally adopted, would be a national blessing. 4. It affords to persons ol every class, and in every statio of life, the means to avoid much uuure misery to thei families, and to render them independent of public or private charity 5. It is a scheme by which any sura of money may be secured at death, whenever that event may tako place, or to be received at any given age of the lifo assured.
