EXTENSION OF CITY BOUNDARY.
Tj the Editor of tho Sew Zkal.w-'d Herald. Sir., —In the Council on Tuesday last, an honorable member said that he hoped the day was near at hard, when the power of the City Board would be extended, and a larger area included within tho rateable bounds of the city. The honorable member might have said—though ho did not say so—that seeing the rates were insufficient, squandered as they have been, for the requirements of a few pet streets, he hoped to see black mail levied on the suburbs, to supply its deficiency. This, sir, is what the result of the Jiroposal would be. A large area of land cut up in allotments, with streets only existing on paper, would be taxed in the same proportion as city property ; vhile not a penny of the rates levied ■would bo spent in such newly annexed districts. This would be neither more nor less than a.barefaced robbery. It will be time enough to extend the city boundary, •when we have a corporation, and sueli provision made that it be divided into so many wards and the money raised in each ward be spent in such ward, and then too the wards shall be marked out with judgment, and not as now wliero there is a slice of the centre of the town attached to each so that the rates gathered on the extremity of the city boundary may yet find their way to the centre and still bo spent in the same wards in which they are raised New wards outside the present boundary must be established and added to the number already existing, not be merged in them.—Yours, &c., Eatepaxbb. Auckland, June 20.
