RETRENCHMENT.

To the Editor of the New ZeaL&KD Herald.Sib,—ln your contemporary's leader of the 12th. instant, there is an article on Retrenchment which has much edified me. It exalts Mr. Weaver, the chief engineer, at the expense of all the other Provincial servants. It is proposed that the Waste Lands and Survey Department should be put under him. at his present salary, which is £800 a year; as just now he has actually nothing to do, of course, it would be a saving, but I have heard on competent authority that he is so ignorant of surveying requisites as not to know which end of a theodolite to look through. Nevertheless I have no doubt he is °s competent to fill those offices as he is for his present one, tho' I have heard that in Australia they thought him worth no more than midshipman's pay, that is '• nothing a year and find himself." But your contemporary does not carry his ideas of Betrenclimenfc far enough, the offices of Superintendent and Superintendent of Police should, also be given him— provided he has an increase of salary he will no doubt accept any number of offices you offer him, and will also discharge their duties as satisfactorily as ho does his present ones. As the time of the Governor, Sir G. Grey is nearly expired, he might also be induced to accept his position in addition, which would be a great advantage to the province as it would bring' us into closer connection with the Imperial Government. As modesty is not his failing he would doubtless accept, for according to a free rendering of Shakspeare, " his great desire has stomach for them all."—I am, &c., x.c. Homo.
