PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
The Council sat yesterday at the usual hour. Several motions were disposed of. A motion' for return of lands, made by Mr. Creighton, was withdrawn, on the recommendation of the Government. A motion by Captain Cooper, to tax the lands to be granted under new regulations at the rate of sixpence an acre was negatived on a division —Noes, 22; Ayes, 1. The Provincial Treasurer made a financial statement, which will be found at length in another column. Papers were laid on the table relating to correspondence with the Government respecting the appointment of Engineer-in-Chief; also correspondence with Dr. Stratford, relating to immigration, and papers relating to the case of Joseph Tuckwell; also the statement of revenue and expenditure for the five months past of the present year ; also the estimates for the remainder of the year. ■ . Mr. Stark, in reply to a question, statedthat in the case of Captain . Wing, wliose conduct was made the subject of investigation, that gentleman courted the fullest inquiry. A very animated discussion tock place upon the proposed reductions in the salaries of Government officials, which will be found at lengtbin another column..
