The Sarah's cargo of Mauritius sugar is to be offered for sale to-morrow. Business is quiet. The news by the mail is favourable, and an improvement in general trade is expected. The sugar market is teavy, and it is uncertain what policy importers will adopt; the Herman Doctor has been ordered on to Sydney. The Mauritius sugar which arrived yesterday is likely to be stored by importers. Forty-nine packages of Martell's dark brandy, hogsheads and quarters, sold at 6s 6d to 6s 9d for export to Sydney and Queensland ; sales of Joule's ale have taken place at £8 12s 6d for parcels ; salt is firm, at lis 0-|d. A public meeting is to be held in the Town Hall to-night, to ursre the prosecution of public works. Ihe commercial news by the mail is likely to improve the value of goods here. The public meeting last night was largely attended, fand resolutions passed urging cn the Government to press forward public works as quickly as possible. Wheat is very firm ; holders of both wheat and flour ask high rates. Sales of wheat are report ed at 4s 7d. Country flour sold at £10 7s fid. .June 12. The Government have received six of the latest novelties in breech-loading firearms, and a trial of them is shortly to take place. Wheat is scarce, and in good demand ; small sales have been made at the Port at 4s 7d ; 2000 bushels have been sold at an advance on that price, but the actual figure has not transpired ; flour is firmer at £10 lbs to £1110s. ■ June 13. A dispute has arisen between the Marino Board and the Corporation of Adelaide, as to the jurisdiction over the lake at Torrens Dam ; the former asserting their power of navigation in the colony, and consequently requiring the boats upon it to be registered at Port Adelaide. It is reported that the Government refused to allow Wright, Woods, and Hamilton, architects for the new Post Office and Telegraph Office, to supervise the. works; the Colonial Architect is for the future to have supervision of all Government works. Wheat is very firm ; the 20,000 bushels referred to yesterday were sold at 4s 9d per bushel, and that price would now be given, but there is none offering. Flour, firm, at £10 10s to £1110s. June 14, Thursday, the 20th June, will be observed as a public holiday. The Gas Company lias acceded to all the terms proposed by the Corporation for lighting the city. The Government land sale yesterday only realised £481. The news from the North continues satisfactory as regards lambing, but more rain is wanted. The Government has agreed to pay "Wright and Woods 2i per cent, on their estimate of the cost of building the new Post Office and Telegraph Office, and a further 2i- per cent, on the work already done. New tenders are to be called for. _ The import market is very dull, which at this time of the year is not unusual. There is no inquiry for goods, buyers only purchasing for immediate wants. The corn market is firm ; sales of wheat are reported at 4s 9d, at which price large parcels if offered would be taken up for export.
