GENERAL GOVERNMENT GAZETTES.
New Zealand Gazelles were published on llie 10th, 12th, loth, and. 20th inst. The first named contain simply the prorogation of the Assembly to the 30tii prox. That of the 12th contains, amongst other rratter, regulations for the sale of town, suburban, and rural lands in the Bay of Islands settlement; also regulations under which the " Secondary Punishment Act Amendment Act, ISGS," shall be carried out, under which Act certain amounts of solitary confinement, and floggings, restricted to 50 lashes, can be given to convicts in our gaols. This Gazette contains also the acceptance of his resignation by the lion. John Johnston of his seat in the hxecutive of the colon} - of .New Zealand, also the appointment ot Major Kicliardson and a Mr. John Maclean to the Legislative Council, and Mr. James Farmer, of Aueklard, to be aJ. P. It contains also the judgment by the Compensation Court in the case of the I'apakura block. The Gazette of the 15th contains further matter in reference to the Postal conference, which we received by last mail and have already published such portion as is generally interesting. The conference may now indeed be considered broken up by the withdrawal of Victoria from any participation in the proposed arrangement. j lie Gazelle of the 20th instant contains an authorisation from the Governor to Oilicers Commanding t orps of Volunteers and Militia, and to the Chairman of Committees of the House of Representatives to frank letters and packets sent by them on public service. '1 he resignation of the commissions by the following officers is accepted : —Lieut. A. A. Abbott. Auckland Militia; and i ornet A. Jl Shackell. lioyal Cavalry Volunteers. This Gazette also contains regulations as to the examinations of Masters and Engineers plying in JS'ew Zealand waters.
