CITY WEST ELECTIONS.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND PEOVINCIAL COUNCIL. The retirement of .James Williamson Esq., causes a vacancy iu llio General Assembly for the above electoral district, and tlie election of John "Williamson, Esq., to the o/iicc of Superintendent creates a vacancy for the same district in tlic Provincial Council. Patrick Dignan, Esq., is before the public as a candidate for tlic seat in tlic General Assembly, and J. A. Giltillan, Esq., for tliat in the Provincial Council. The nomination for the General Asscmbl}' takes place on Thursday next, the 25th instant, that for tlxe Provincial Council on the Ist of May next. The election of a member, then, to serve in the General Assembly for the City West will be the first before the public, and we congratulate the electors of tlie City West in having iu Mr. Dignan one in whose well-known political views and integrity _ they can place that entire confidence which should characterise the antecedents of any man whom they send down to "Wellington to advocate tlio rights of Auckland at this important crisis in lier affairs. Mr. Dignan is essentially an Auckland settler, possessing a large stake, not only in the province, but in the city west division itself. We scarcely think the electors signing the requisition could have pitched upon abetter choice. The nomination for the election to the Provincial Council takes place on the Ist proximo, and the address published by Mr. J. A. Gilfillaii will be received with pleasure liy the electors of the City West. Mr. Gillillau is not an old settler, but has long since taken an active part in provincial politics, having been in 1553 a member of the first Provincial Council. Mi*. Gitfillan will, we have no doubt, be returned to the seat vacated by Mr. John Williamson, and much as the latter gentleman will be missed from the Council, as a member, his loss will be the less felt if he is succeeded by a gentleman of Mr. Gil Allan's standing and attainments.
