Detention- ov the Coxtiuci M.ur, Steasieu Hkho.—On Saturday, August 4th, the Hero hove short, and the order was given to go a-head ; but after e, few revolutions tho screw ceased to work, and although a screw -j;ick and a hrttvy pressure of steam were applied it was found impossible to make, it revolve. Under the pressure applied the ecrew-jaok I broke, and a. new set liaring been applied it was found that no impression could be made upon this part of the machinery. At iirst it was thought that somet thing had got round tho screw and jammed it, ao as to prevent it moving. Tho whole machinery was carefully examined by Mr. Francis, nnd Captain Burns, of the Ipswich, when everything with tho exception of the stoppage of the screws was found to be perfectly right. .Next morning-, Monday, Me?ers. Francis and Tyler, descended under water to examine the propeller, but no outward cause of the stoppage could be discovered, and although a severe pressure of steam was put on, no movement of the screw was perceptible. It was then determined to disconnect the screw which proved a long and tedious job, but was at last accomplished on Monday, about midnight. After this had been done the engines worked with ease, thus showing that the obstruction, whatever it was, must be about the propeller. The were carefully examined by Mr. Francis Captnin Burns, L,eich"hardt, and Kate," etearm-rs' all oi whom agreed that they were in Grst-rute working order, and it was their opinion thut the soft metal which had been run into tho"" boss " tn remedy eorae small defect had shifted, and jarnbed the shaft bo as to prevent tho screw working. Yesterday afternoon it had been so far arranged that this vessel should proceed to Sydney to have tho necessary repairs executed, as to authorise the preparatory step of clearing out at tho Custom House for Sydney. Very shortly, however, aftor this was dono, Captain Xogan arrived by the Emma steamer, and after mature deliberation it was determined to have the repairs on the machinery of the Hero executed here. Tho Hero has, during the course of the last twenty-four hours, been relieved of -100 tons of her coals, and will be immediately brought up to the Hats, where the adjustment of her connecting shaft and propeller will be executed under the advice and superintendence of Mr, Francis. At ono time it was thought that the time occupied in completing the repairs would raoro than occupy what would be consumed in a voyage to Sydney ; but, under the abl's management which will now ba applied, we have- little dou >t but that the vessel will bo ablo to proceed before the 20th instant to Bataviu, and bring down the mails from England. To-day we learned one circumstanco which ought not to have been omitted in the previous notioea of this vessel, and that is that three months have not yet elapsed from the time of fitting new " bosses " for the working of the propeller. Xo want of precaution can therefore be attributed to anyone connected with the supervision of the Buip.— Queensland Guardian, August (',

The Hebc.—The repairs on this vessel have been satisfactorily completed, and she has been removed from tho bank without accident, and is again in deep water. Batavia, it expected, will bs reached about the Bth of September, and she will proceed on her return voyage about the 16th, arriving at Port Denieon about the 3rd of October. She will bring the same mails to the colonies, ehe would have done hid s'je started a? originally intended, the only difference being that her stay at Batavia will only be one week instead of three. — Guardian August 14.

The whaling barque Runnymedo, Captain James Bayluy, which returned from n cruise on 29th ultimo wne paid off at tho shipping oflico yesterday. On the settlement of the lays being completed Captain BayIcy in the presence of thu olhcers and crew nvtde reference to the folJowir.g trite but exprcwive paesilgo in the log book : —" Monday July 9th, 18GG, 8.30.u,ra. The captain went up to the mast head and sat on the main top-gallant yard; ship running about two miles per hour. 9 a.m., the main top-gallant tye eirried away close to the yard ; down camo the captain, he struck in his full the topsail yard, and struck the Main brace, and then just <leared the waist boat, and then fell into the water, a distance of 90 feet from tho maintop-gallant yard. Though nearly all hands were on deck, not one had the presence of mind to throw anything overboard. Tho captain could not swimJ Hγ. Bull, the third officerjumped overboard with all his clothes on, and swam to the captain's assistance. Just before tho boat got there the cramp seized Mr. Bull in both legs and ho had as much as he could do to keep up till Mr. Hill, chief officer, got to them with the boatintimo to save them. The captain was very much bruised." Capt. Bnyley then addressed Mr. Bull thanking him in grateful terms, and begged Mr. Bull's acceptance of a very handsomo gold watch and chain as a slight acknowledgement of Mr. Bull's saving his life at imminent risk of his own. Tho watch and chain which aro of the value jf forty guineas were then handed over by Captain Bayley to Mr. Bull who made a short and appropriato reply, expressive of the pride and pleasure ho felt in having been the means of saving his captain, adding that he should always be ready to act in the same way ehould any shipmate ever unfortuatoly stand in similar peril and need of his assistance. The watch boro th-) following inscription on tho interior of the case :—-" Presented by Cuptain Jamos Bayley of tho whaling- barquo, Runnyinedp, to Mr. John Bull, third mato of that vessel, who at the imminent risk of his own life leaped overboard to eave Capt. Bayley, who bad fallen into tho sea from the main topgallant yard, 9th July, 18G(i." The gratifying duty of presentation and acknowledgment having been gone through, three hearty cheers were given for Captain Bayley, and three for Mr. Bull, and the meeting broke up." J

The cutler Three Brothers, Captain Seymour;.left, left again last night for Mangawai, with cargo, and. passengers. Sho will bo followed to-day by the cutter Miranda, Capt. Jadd. The Pbince Alfbed (a)— The P.N.Z. and A.R.IM: Co.'e Bteamship Princo Alfred is at present under-' going a genoral overhaul and outfit, previous to her being despatched to Panama, where she is to act as an omorgency boat, and take up the mails in tho event of any accident occurring to the large vessels. The Princo Alfred is a ship that will do very well for any .occasion liko this, as she is 701 tons register, carrying a cargo of 700 tons coal, nnd her avora'ge speed is very fair. She will proceed to Panama under cauvas, and we believe that Captain Gardyno, lato of the steamer Phcebe, will take her up.— Sydney ITcrald, Aug. 6. Weatkku Tables.—"Wo have roceived a copy of a chart published in Melbourno by G. W. G., containing weather predictions, based upon tho magnetic theory, the information being similar to that given, in Saxby's tables. Tho present chart is compiled from July 1866 to January 1867, and in reference to the predictions for July wo find them very eorreot. For the present month tho following dates are sot down as likely to prove stormy :—lst, etrong breeze ; 6th etrong gale ; 7th and Bth, etrong breoze, probably raiu ; 10ih and 12th, strong breeze ; 14th, strong, i breezo, probably rain ; 17th, strong gale - ; 21st, 23rd, 2-lth, 28th, etrong breeze probably rain.

The Lady "Yovno.—Tho ropairs on this ■vessel are all.but completed. The iron work has been finished in the most satisfactory way, both as rogards the boilera and hull, the whole having been executed by workmen omployod by tho Q.S.N. Company, under the superintendence of the resident engineer Sir. John Sinclair, Kangaroo Point, and not by Messrs. IJ.1 J . N. Russell and Co., as formerly erroneously stated. This part of tho work has been performed in thq most substantial and workmanlike mauner—notwithstanding the opinions hazarded that workmen oould not he found in Sydney c ipahlo of doing it—and it will bear the inspection of any competent judgo. The woodwork is also far advanced, and thero is no doubt but she will bo ready to meet her engapror.-ents ' :< -'a ; l for Sydney on Tuesday.— Queensland Gu<n ili-m, Aug. 4
