Prince Alfred.—lnfamous Boak.—Some very evilly-disposed person circulated ajumour in the town on Saturday evening that the mail steamer jPrince Alfred, which left this port on Friday, had gone ashore near Wangc-rei. The rumour caused ■ohe greatest anxiety on the part of persons who had or friends on board, and who were constantly inquiring of people on the wharf and ekewhere as to the correctness of the report. We need hard.y; say that it was impossible that any news could have been received as to the condition of the Prince Alfred at the time this most mischievous rumour was circulated. A statement more reckless or more nonsensical, if it be not actually malicious cannot be conceived. The only vessel" that could have brought any tidings of the Prince Alfred was the Annie Laurie, which arrived here from W*iagarei on Saturday forenoon, the reporis seeing the Prince Alfred off the Hen and Chickens, at five ° u ' ock^ e previous evening, steaming away, and all well. Whether the poor fool who fabricated the story thoug.it of celebrating " All Fools' Day " by promulgating a most unwarrantable joke or not lie is fortunately alone in the pre-eminence of foliv ■which would give general anxiety for the sake of u. most witless canard.
