CITY BOARD.—Monday.

The City Board of Commissioners held their fortnightly meeting yesterday. Letters were received from the Engineer, stating that . the difference in the size of the water standpipes had been made on the score of economy, and that it would require £150 to effect any alteration just at present. A letter was received stating that he had communicated with the authorities of the ißank of New Zealand, who promised to remove the hoarding at the date of his writing, February 20. Mi 1 . M. Somerville called tlie attention of the Commissioners to ihe state of Barrack-street, (between Yictoria and Wellesley-streets.) The Inspector of .Nuisances called tho attention of the Commissioners to the disgraceful state of the lower part of Cook-street on both sides of. thp old bridge adjoining tlio market site. Messrs. ThoriSton,' , Smith and Eirth directed the attention of tho Commissioners to the dangerous state of the lane at the I rear of their premises. The proprietor of the United Servico Hotel called attention to tlio filthy state of the "Wellesley-strect and Queen-street corners. A letter was received from Mr. Wrigg, explaining tho circumstances under which he had thought a right to certify for extra costs, and stating that he did so entirely within the terms of the contract, also for thepurposeof obviating damage to private property, for which the Board would have been liable; and further, to prevent damage to the works themselves. The letter further stated, that £10 per cent, was not an unusual allowance for increased cost, which would have amounted to . .0150; his certificate was only for £109. The Board thought as the repairs of tho stand pipes were provided for by the Provincial Council, the city had nothing to do with them. In respect to Barrack-street, the Foreman of "Works was ordered to report to estimate the cost, and the Secretary was instructed to inquire what tho residents would subscribe towards the expense. The letter of the Inspector of Nuisances was forwarded to his Honor the Superintendent, with a request that he would advance a portion of the Market-house loan. The Secretary was instructed to inform Messrs. Firth, Thornton, and Co. " that the Board would not accept any responsibility, and that those gentlemen must fence in their own property. The state of the corner of Wellesley and Queen-streets (Quick's corner), was referred to the Foreman of Works. It was explained to the Board that the contract for Grey-street works was to have been completed on the lh' of January. They were not finished until th 3 22nd, a penalty accruing under the 21st clause of the contract. The Board decided without approving of Mr. Wrigg's conduct upon paying tlie charge for extras £109, at the same time deducting £60, the penalty incurred by non-complction of the work at the time provided for in the contract, The other parts of Grey-street were ordered to be continued provided the contractors would lay down the metal at 2s. 9d. per yard. The rates collected since preceding meeting were £930. The Aucklanct Corporation Bill, which was to have been drafted for the Board, instructions having been given to Mr. "\Yynn on the !)th December, was referred to by several members of tlie Board. The Board had done everything in their power to get the draft, but the law adviser had neglected to do what he undertook to do. Mr. D. Graham suggested a vote of censure upon the law officer. Mr. Ashton thought that the public ought to bo made acquainted that the responsibility of tho delay did not rest with the Board!. The Board adjourned at half-past four o'clock
