A CROAK FROM THE SWAMP.

To the Editor of the New Zeaiand Hebaxt>. g tß> Tn your issue of the 22nd ultimo, thero appeared a Utter from Mr. Harrington, abut the site of a public market, the writer stated that " If the swamp called the market reserve were drained, the approaches made, the market house built, tlie stalls crecfecd, and somebody appointed at a high salary to look after the wbolo affair, so remote is the site from the ordinary tiuffic of the city that not a 6tall would let, and the money spent would be wasted." Now, Mr. Editor, I wonder if the writer ever visited the spot Culled tho " Market Heservo " so as to seo tho dire necessity of some public building being erected thereon. Millions of mosquitoes, and thousands of rata make that localitv their summer residences, and themselves b-ing consumers of marketable goods, thus offering great inducements to speculators in produce. Mote ver, the odours of thafc delightful neighbourhood which gallantly attack tha nasal organs of all passers by, must be another great source of attraction. If the City Board thus be true to their own interests, the swamp called the 11 Market Reserve," will in» vitably swamp the Bazaarproject, thus giving the owners of land in Cook-street that benefit to: which they are justly entitled, increased value of pro-, perty by iloso proximity to a public building. The situation referred to may not be so central, as the old Court House or the Bazaar Xards, but it wa* left specially for that purpose, and it is only right, that the money should be jspent upon it, that is to. say if tho utu be forthcoming. _ .
