NEW ZEALAND.
(To the EcJitoT of the Times.) g IB u a y I treapasß on your politeness to make a few remarks on your article on New Zealand in the Times of to-day ? . . , ... . You speak of the natives as barbarous tribes, having hunted wild beasts and each other through the thickets. That they hunted wild beasts is incorrect, for there are none indigenous to the country , that they hunted each other is correct, and will load thinking men to doubt whether savages decrease bo much before the civilization of the white man as when left to themselves. . ... The paragraph in which you intimate that th savages refused to move an inch ir.>mthe front of our civilization conveys an erroneous idea, for were not asked to do bo until they went to war with us, and no land bad boen seized as so many on the contrary, we were invited to Battle among them and to buy Sr land (out of which a portion was always reserved fur their ben- fit) ; afterwards thoj disputed the titles of some of.it, as a pretence under which to form a Maori sovereignty. con . You say, " How is it that, even if we woiiW con form to no other law he did not conform to the law of 10,000 bayonets? It was thievery army which cave the Maories their advantages. .. t After this most truthful and honest assertion would ask, on behalf of my brother reasonable for a noble country lite r ® » y ew expect tho sparse and scattered pP ' entirely Zealand to pay the cost of a War which lb Mwrt) Imperial, and which she admits has been by her own mismanagement.
