LATER FROM OPOTIKI.

THE HAUHAUS WITHIN THEEE MILES OF THE CAMP. NAIIEOW ESCAPE OF MS. WAHBEICK. DISCO VEBY OP THE MUTILATED BODY OF ONE OF THE NATIVE FOECE. By the arrival yesterday of the cutter Whitlm Captain Doughty, from Opotiki, we hate intelk gence from that place up to Sunday last. Everything in Opotiki itself was then quiet, but the Hauhaus were reported as having been seen within a few miles of the camp. Mi'. Warbrick and another gentleman start jd on Monday week last, for the purpose of going overland to Tauranga, and when about three miles on their road they were stopped by a friendly native who refused to let them pass on any further as it was dangerous, and shortly afterwards the rebels were observed pouting over a neighbouring hill like a swarm of bees, Mr. Warbrick and his friend at once took to flight and reached the camp in safety, but with the loss of their swags, &c. The troops were turned out that night, and all the bush in the vicinity scoured, but without any traces of the rebels being found. Had it not been for tie friendly native, these two travellers would no doubt have met with a brutal and cruel death. The condemned murderers of Fulloonwere still in custody, and the s.s. St. Kilda, which had arrived from Wellington, brought no orders in regard to their disposal. It was thought by many that some right the camp might be attacked by a large party of rebels with a view of releasing them. On Sunday last, the mutilated body of a friendly native was discovered about three miles off along the beach. It was recognised as one of the Native Contingent, who is supposed to liave been murdered by the Hauhaus, as it was frightfully cut and hacked with a tomahawk.
