BANKING ACCOUNTS.

W:-: publish from the New Zealand Gazette of Saturday, November 25, a General Abstract of the Accounts of the Banks of the Colony named therein, for the Quarter ended 30th September, 1865. We do not propose to recapitulate all the items of which (hose accounts are composed, but content ourselves with noticing one or two of them. The total deposits in the seven banks amount to £2,6-15,102 ss. 7d.: those of the Bank of New Zealand amount to £1,121,217 Is. 7d., rather more than four-tenths of the total—or, making a comparison, the deposits at the Bank of Neiv Zealand arc within £150,500 of those of the Union B:\nk of Australia nnd the Bank of New South Wales, and exceed by more than one and six-truths the deposits of the .Bimk of Now South Wales, of Otago, Australasia, Auckland, and the Commercial Bank of New Zealand all put together. This is conclusive as to public confidence, popularity, and business. The secret, no doubt, is that the Bank of .New Zealand was founded and has been carried on as a local institution by our merchants and professional men. The success of this institution, therefore, is an earnest of what vigour, determination, and prudence can effect when directed by local capitalists. The total liabilities of the banks show that those of the Bank of A r rw Zealand are £1,507,120, and the assets £2,009,681, leaving a margin of £44-2,48], or between one-third and one-fourth more than the liabilities. Of the Union, the liabilities- are £91G,-557, and the assets £1,287,559, or rather more than one-third more than the liabilities. The total assets of all the banks were £3.501,01-1, andtheassets£s,377,sßß. The notes and bills discounted, and all other debts due to the bunks amounted to £4,191,233. Those of the Bank of New Zealand reached £1,644,217, or nearly four-tenths of the whole of the seven banks, of the Union £882,342, or rather more than half of those of the Bank of New Zealand, and than one-fifth of the deposits of all the other banks. This column then shows then the amount of bills discounted, of accommodation given to the mercantile and trading classes.

The Bank of Auckland lias deposits to the amount of £29,434, nud discounts reach to £74/184, Uio total liabilities bviiifi £'15,075, and the assets £82,97-6.

Tho rate per annum of the last , ranged from 10 to 18 per cent., and tli c 1 i of reserve profits from £750 to £363 total of the reserve profits of all the banlt=t' • £1,230,724, or more than one-third o f 3 entiro liabilities. Although there mav I " tightness in the money market," arising fr" \ various causes, yet it is aby no means denV l> sing fact to know that £2,045,102. lie dennrif V in the banks of the colony- .
