James Forrest, Thomas Davis, and Kenneth Ferguson, were charged with this offence, and ordered to be fined 20s. and costs, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment. WIFE BEATING-. John Kent, charged by Sarah Kent with assaulting her by striding hee on tho face with his fist, and cutting her lip, and complainant further stated that from bis conduct on this and other occasions, she feared he would do her some grievous bodily harm unless ho was restrained. Sarah Kent, sworn, Baid: lam the wife of tho defendant. Yesterday he struck mo on the mouth. Tho marks on my faco aro o msed by his violence. I am afraid he w'dl do me somo bodily harm unless he is restrained. lam hardly capable of working from the repeated beatings I have had from him. Ilis Worship said it was a most cruel thing of e, big mon hko tho defendant to beat a poor creature like hin wife in that manner—a most shameful thing. Her face was covered with marks and bruises, clearly showing the ill-treatment sho had suffered, from. The Cour; ordered the defendant to find two sureties of £t0 each to bo od his gocd behaviour for six months.
