These are my sentiments and political principles. If elected, X shall be thankful. If not, it will be all the same." Pbesident Lincoln's Last Story.—One of tho last, if not the very k't, told by President Lincoln was to one of his Cabinet, who came to see him, to ask if it would be proper to permit Jake Thompson to slip through Maine in disguise and embark for Portland. The President, as usual, was disposed to bo merciful, and to permit tho arch rebel to pass unmolsted, but the secretary urged that he should bo arrestee as a traitor. "By permitting-him to escape the penalties of treason," persistently remarked the seeietary,'• you sanction it." " Well," replied Sir. Lincoln. " there was an Irish soldier here last summer who wanted something to drink stronger than water, and .'■topped at a druir shop, where he espied a soda-fountain. ' Mr. Doctor,' said he, ' give me, plase, a glass of soda-wather, an' if yees can put in a few drops of whiskey unbeknown to anyone I'll be o " Now," continued Mr. Lincoln, "if Jako Thompson is permitted to go through Maine unbeknown to anyone, what's the harm So don't havo him arrested."—Bostcn Journal. A Babylonish Idea.—A young oflicer who wa3 always " hard up," upon being asked by a lady whether he liked babies, replied that he did not think them very interesting until they were able to Btand a-loan.
