REPORTED CAPTURE OF THREE OFFICERS OF THE 68tli. We give below the extract of a private letter received on Saturday by a gentleman in Auckland, from the camp at Tauranga. We trust that immediate steps will be taken for the rescue of these officers of the 68th as well as of Mr. Bennett White. " Yesterday evening information was received herefrom Maketu of a most heart-rending and ine aiieholy character. It-appears that the cutter Knte was lying in the M<-nteakaira roads (on the east coast), and was attacked by a number of pai marires, who succeeded in murdering all the hands except the .Supercargo, Mr Bennett White, and his son. The Supercargo's son is a half-caste, and a mere boy, and having stationed himself between his father and his enemies saved the father's life, as the fanatics not wishing to injure the boy refrained firing at the father. " Information has also been furnished us this evening, from the West direction. It is currently reported that three officers of the 68th L.I. who went on yesterday to Te Puna for a shooting excursion have been detained by the natives. " It is very probable we will want a reinforcement in this locality ere long. 1 firmly believe we have few natives here, except the Arawa's or Maketu, who are not pai marires."
