NELSON. During the past month a good deal of business lins been do"c in Nelson, trade in general being brisk, through the demand for stores and provisions of all kind, suitable for a digging population, which the large body of people now on the West (.'oast diggings has created. But nltliough the consumption has been great, the supply has steadily kept up with the demand, and what with the arrivnl of large parcels of goods from Otago and Sydney and Melbourne, together with the cargo of tho Magna Bona from England, stocks of all kinds aro plentiful in the hand 3 of merchants. and prices in general are a trifle lower. Flour fell £2 per ton last week, and is now quoted wholesale at £26 ; Chilian, £24.—Colonist, April 11. OTAGO. There has been scarcely any demand for poods'of any kind tlnoughout ihe day ; a few goods have been shipped for the West Coast, but the amount is light at presei t, though houses who have cmbaiked in the trade are anxiously looking for the Alhambrr., the advices by which vessel may induco heavier shipments. The auction sales of the day possess no interest. The cieditors of Sir. James Johnston, of Maclag-gan-strect, met, ns desired, by circular ; a request for time, the only accommodation sought, was promptly acceded to. A meeting of the creditors of Messrs. Lawson and Co. was also held, and an offer submit:cd for the whole of the assets, with a view to promptly realisi"g the estate. The offer was accepted. Mr. J. C. Brown, of Tuapeka, in announcing his having suspended payment, requests his cieditors to meet to-mo.row (Wednesday). The Tuapeka Jlccorder reports of the state of trade in that district:— The unsettled slato of the mining population during the last few weeks, consequent upon the con flicting intelligence received from the West Coast, has exercised an unfavourable influence upon the local trade. Besides the numbers already left, a large portion of those that remain seem undecided whether to leave or not, and the result of course i.that the demand for stores is limited to what is actually required for immediate use. Within the last day or two a feeling to settle down to woik appears to be gaining ground. At one of the hill sluicing claims at the head of Gabriel's Gull}-, a washing-up is fixed to take place to-day or to-morrow, and tho result of six men's work for a period of ten weeks is estimated on good authority at £1500. SYDNEY. Piuiie Market Repoet, W. Ciiatfiuld.—l have :io increased activity to report in the share market or any important fluctuations in prices. Commercial Bank stock is scarce ; holders of Bank of New .South Wali-s shares are asking full rates. Insurance stocks are flat, particularly those establishments embracing fire risks. For mining shares there has been no demand. I have done nothing in Debentures. My sales have been City Bank, at £10 6s; Australian General Assurance, at £8 7a. Gd ; gaslight, £l 3 —Herald, April 3.

MELBOURNE. There have been some fair pales of teas effected today, the business in that articlo bring still brisk at former quotations. In grain and flour there has been little doing. The report of the arrival at tho Heads of tho brig Victoria from Chili, tended to depress tho market for bread-stuffs, and no sales of importance occurred. A. parcel of maize has been quitted at 4s. 3d. Tho residue of the cargo of sugars ex Mauritius win placed to-day at fair market rales. Sixty packages of twist tobacco were disposed of at a figure which Ims not been divulged. Masting powder is selling in good quanta! ies at an advance on previously quoted prices. Gunnies are in demanJ, and wo hear of parcels fetching as high as lis. to lis. Gd.
