ABIIIYAL OF THE BOMBAY, EliOM LONDON VESSEL DISMASTED. TOWED IN BY H-M.S.S. CTJRACOA. Considerable excitement prevailed in tho town during tbe morning of Saturday, in consequence of tbe report which had been current that tho Curagoa had been signalled in sight with a ship dismasted in I tow. On arrival in harbour tho ship proved our old friend tho Bombay, Captaiu Sellavs. The ship had I L'Mil out lil days from tbe Downs, with 400 I p>:.3ci>gwa ys'.rt general cuvge. It will bo

seen by the reports subjoined that the Bombay had fallen in -with the terrific gale -which had beeu experienced along the , coast of 276X7 Zealand. Much anxiety had been felt as to the condition of the ship and passengers. We are happy to say the passengers were in the best health and spirits, and that the ship was a model of cleanliness evincing the greatest care and attention on the parof her commander and officers. When the condition of the ship is considered, knocked about ae she must have beon in a gale of two days' duration, terrific seas running, and freighted with passengers who had never before been bo situated, calm presence of mind and 'other sailor-like high qualities were necessary to preserve discipline and prevent anything like disturbance, which in such circumstances might have been fatal. The passengers speak in the very highest terms of their captaiu. Itisimost satisfactory to perceive so unanimous an approval of the skill and gallantry of the'captain of this fine ship, coming into our harbour as he does under colours of distress. The following is a narrative of the log :—

Extract from the log of the ship Bombay, from London to Auckland, K"ew Zealand, 1864-5, with free emigrants:— November 26, 8 a.m.—Sailed from Gravesend with light westerly winds, and at 6 p.m., came to anchor oif the North Foreland; strong westerly breezos with rain. Passengers beginning to gei sea sick j lay wind bound under the North Foreland until the 30th,

then weighed -and proceeded with light westerly winds, reached the Downs and came to anchor.

December Ist.—Strong S."W. gales and strong sea. 2nd, more moderate hazy weather; got underweigh and proceeded dpwn channel against strong breezes and gales. Passengers suffering from sea sickness.

December 4tli.—Landed the pilot off Sloanage and again proceeded on our voyage ; still strong gales, with rain ; on the Bth, abreast of the Lizard, and exchanged signals .with ship Treyallian to' Calcutta; had a continuance of strong S.W. gales, with rain and hail, until the 13th, in lat. 45*23 N., and long. 9*37 "W. ; then got the wind from the north, and went cheerily on until the 17th, then in lat. 33 10 N., and long. 17*43 AV., when we got a return of our old enemy the Sou'wester. Strong gales continued until the 21st. On the 18th we sighted tho Island of Madeira, being d.E., distance 28 miles. From tho 21st to the 26th had westerly winds, moderate, ship slipping along pretty well with them ; then began the. N.E. trades, moderate to light, in lat. 18 35 N., long. 2919 AY., and continued until the 31st; in lat. 4*33 N., and long. 21*12 VY., had no calms, but fine smart southerly breezes until we got tho S.E. trades, on January 3rd, 1865, in lat. I*7 N., and long. 26*10 W., out 39 days from Gravesend, and 34 days from the Downs ; had fine steady S.E- trades until wo sighted tho Island of Trinidad, on the lltli, which was passed at a distance of 10 miles ; same afternoon signalised the British ship Moravian, from Melbourne to London, out 46 days; at 8 p.m. lost S.E. trades, had calms and squalls throughout the night; from thence until wo reaeliod the meridian of Greenwich had light winds aud fine weather (mostly), to the 24th Janu ary ; thence until wo reached the meridian of the Cape, had fine strong breezes, making good averages, Capo was reached on the 28th, makiug 52 days from tho -Eddy-tone, and 62 from Gravesend, froa thence up to 40 ° E. had lino smart hroezes, and squally, with occasional showers of rain ; and from 40 ° East up to 100 ° tC. had light westerly winds and calms, making very poor progress, and from thence up the meridian of ELobart Town, had fine strong breezes and fine weather the whole day; rounded Tasmania on tho 27th without seeing it, wind light to fresh, with rain, and winds variable from N.W. to N.E., and back to K. until noon of tho Bth March, when tho wind began to freshen from the N.E., with small rain, and by G p.m. the wind had then freshened considerably, when wo shortened sail to double reefs, and stowed main course, cross-jack, and spanker ; at S*2o p.m. tho ship was struck with a violent squall from the S.E., which carried away the bowsprit close to the knight heads, coming with fore-topmast, fore-topsail-yards, topgallant royal do., and all sails, main topgallant, and royal-masts, and upper topsail yards sprung, and all °ails attached, also mizen royal-masts and yard. Foresail and mizen topsail, also blew to pieces. After some amount of labour and difficulty, got all tho wreck cut away from the ship fearing that some of the heavy-spars might with all tho mass of ironwork attached to them, chafe a hole in the vessel By midnight got clear of all tho wreck of any conse-. quence. Blowing very hard, and high short cross and confused sea running, making ship roll heavily. 9th. Commences same 3o::t of woather, very anxious, and passengers much put out. As the day passed on so the gale increased until it was blowing with hurricane violence, with terrific gusts of wind, and blending drift of salt water Bpray, the only sail set being tho upper topsail, and that lowered down on top of lower one, which had already blown clean away. At the ship give a sudden lurch in a terrific gust, when the mainmast went by the board, taking away mizen topmast and all attached thereto, and springing tho mizenmast, which for some time wo despaired of saving, but succeeded at last; cross tack blex from the gaskets, and spanker from mast; cut away all gear as quickly v.s possible for the safety and benefit of all concerned, and at •1 p.m. the starboard quarter boat, although or.tra lashed, blew clear away from the after davit, and had to bo cut away to prevent doing further damage. "Wind strl! continuing to blow as hard as over, and ship rolling feai*fully, a complete wreck; stillkeepingremarkably light. 8 p.m., still blowing hard from south, wind veering quickly round, and by 10 p.m. had reachcd S.si.AV"., weather brightening up, and barometer rising, which has never been lower than 29 ° 23'. Still blowing hard, but gusts not so severe. Midnight moderating fast. Barometer t»t 29 ° 50'. Sky brightening up. Ship laying-to with tarpaulin in mizzen rigging ; all hands emplojod in clearing away the wreck.

10tli, at G a.m.—Found the fore-trees gone. Secured tho yards with dilliculty; ship rolling heavy, and straining a good deal, but neither shipping nor leaking any water of consequence. Noon, moderate and cloudy. -1 p.m., got foresail bent and net. 10 p.m., bent mizen topsail aud sot it to steady ship, and head to wind and sea as much as possible, also a portion of tho bowsprit fast, by a warp from forward, to assist in doing same. At 730 ship liovo in sight; sigmilled her, when she immediately bore away for us. She proved to be the barque Constance, of Auckland, aud also bound for that port. Asked her to report lis at Auckland, but ho kindly offered to take lis in tow until relief was had or tho ship put in condition to proceed on her voyage, which I readily and thankful'r accepted, fearir.g that in the disabled state of tho and the i»um"M>v of souls on board, that if caught in another !■ ale the West Coast of New Zealand, we could do for ourselves. At 10 am. she took us in to v, wine! continuing light from S.W. Our old acquaintance, the good ship Caducetu, ia command of Captain Holton, arrived in harbour yet* terday evening from London, after a passage of 103S days from the Start.

The following is her report:—Left LondonNo« vembor 30th, taking final departure from the Start, December 13th; passed outside the Cape de Terd Islands, experiencing very poor and indifferent North East trade winds; crossed the Equatdf on the 16th January, the S.E. tradds also proving light and baffling ; crossed the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope on the 9th of February, ran down her easting in the parallel of 48 ° South, and experienced fina weather until reaching Tasmania. The first load Bighted on this coast was the Kings, which were mada on Friday last, since which N.W. winds were experienced, and the Bhip arrived in harbour as shore stated.

The Caducous brings a large cargo, and some SfO pasasngers, all in good health, there having been only two deaths on the passage—one an infant, and too other an adult, named Howlett, from consumption. The ship, which is well and favourably known _here o . has arrived in harbour in a most dean and creditable condition, which reflects great credit upon Captain Holton and his officers. Captain Holton, it will be remembered, was here some short time ago, having conveyed hither in the Caduceus some 400 volunteers from Melbourne, in command of the late LieutenaaS Percival. —Herald, March 27. ARRIVAL OF THK PEGAHUS, FEOM LONDON. The good ship Pegasus, in command of our old friend Capt. Cornwell (who it will be remembered was here some short time since in the Royal Stuart) arrived in harbor last evening, after a capital run' of 94 days from the Noro. She sailed from Gravesend on the 22nd, and the Nore on the 24th December; passed outside the Cape de Verd I elands, and crossed the equator o tha 17th Jan., 26 days out, in 26° 30' W. lon. Or QS «ed meridian of the Cape of Good UopeinparL 47 8,, on the 14th February, with steady brisk breezes frotß the westward, which continued until off Kerguelen'B land, when a strong S. E. gale (which continued for five days, and was accampanied by a large quantity of hail, sleet, and rain) was encountered, which drove the ship considerably north. .After that had variftbio brisk and strong gales veering from N. W. to S. W., and vice versa. Kan down her Easting between the parallels of 49 o and 50 o 8., chiefly experiencing very cold weather, with continuous hail and enow. Passed the South Cape of Tasmania on the 16th March.

when the encountered a violent gale from the N.N.S. vee ing- suddenly to the 8.W., causing a very high, and conflicting sea, during which the ship rolled fearfully. After that had light N.E. breezes, until sighting this coast, on Saturday last, when she rounded the North Cape (91 days out from London river) ; had variable weather on the coast and arrived in harbour as above stated. The Pegasus brings 234 passengers, ell in good health, there being only three deaths (infanta) during the passage. There was also one birth and a marriage. It is also pleasing to record that tSi® passengers are highly satisfied 'with the ship, and speak in the highest terms of the conduct of Captain Conr.vell.—Herald, March 29. ARMYAIi OF THE LOUI3A, FROM LONDON. The ship Louisa, Capt. Hall, arrived in harbour yesterday evening from London, but we are MJlry (from reasons that we refrain from publishing) that wo cannot lay before our readers our usual shipping report of her voyage. We learn from, a passenger that she left London on the 9th November, and on the whole experienced fine weather. The Louisa brings a large cargo, and some 305 passengers, all in good health.—-IZcrahl, March 29.
