TRIAL TRIP OF THE STEAMER WAITEMATA. Yesterday wai the day fixed by the directors of the Waitemata Steam Ferry Company, for the excursion trial trip of their new steamer the Waitemata. Numerous invitations having been issued, at ten o'clock the wharf was crowded with "J tending ralseneers, and long ere • the starting time the little steamer was crowded to overflowing. Shortly eleven o'clock she cast from the wharf, and went full tpsed up the harbour to Stokes' Point, where the engines were reversed, and she steamed down harbour again full speed as far as the North Head; here she turned again to run the measured mile, and try her steaming fluidities. , , The folio wing'is a short outline of the her doings The Waitemata is a paddlo boat, fitted with a rudder at both ends, so that she can nteam either one way or the oilier, is 70 feet long, 16 ieet beam, 4 feet 10 inches depth of hold, 95 tons burthen, draws 2 feet of water, and was built by Messrs. Holmes Brothers, of the N ortli Shore. She has two engines of 32 horse-power collectively, and are horizontal, direct acting, high pressure engines s the cylinder is-13 inches, with a length of stroke I inches, and is capable of working up -to 30 lbs. ! pressure of eteam. The whole of the machinery, and

ttleclier boiler, which ib multitubular, was manufactured by MessrsYickeiy and Maeefield, and reflects the highest credit upon them. She carries six tons of coal, n ith a consumption on an average of ono cwfc. per hour.

Tho Waitomata first ran the measured mile against tho tide in 9 minutes 55 seconds, averaging 6*05 knots per hour, with revolutions of the engines; tho next trial was "with the tide, when she accomplished it in 6 minutes 36 seconds, averaging 9 09 knots per hour, with 36revolutions of the engine; tho average then therefore remained at 7*57 knots per hour, which was at onco decided by all parties to bo highly satisfactory. One fault however was discovered, which waa that tho steam chest was not large enough, and therefore insufficient space for the steam, which, with the boiler priming, caused tho water to descend in perfect showers upon the dock; this fault however is to be altered, and Messrs. Vickory and Masefield have at once agreed to enlarge the steam chest beforo the steamer runs.

Captain Johnson, Warden Marino Board, and Mr. Aylnior, Government engineer, accompanied the vessel in her trip, in their official capacity, and pronounced themselves highly satisfied with the whole proceeding. The engineer appointor! to the Waitemata is Mr. G. Burner, who holds a Marine JBoard certificate ; and her commander, Mr. A. Martin, is so well known amongst us, that it is unnecessary for us to make any remarks whatever upou lxis capabilities.

After reaching Holmes's Wharf, the passengers, amongst whom wo noticed tho members of the Provincial Council, and most of tho leading men of this city, went on shore, and alter a short Btay there proceeded again with the vessel to Takapuna Lake, whore the party again landed, and enjoyed themselves with tho beauteous scenery which abounds there

A Biimptuous spread waa provided on board, of which all heartily partook, and it reflected great credit to tho caterer. Afterwards tho toast of " Success to tho Waitemnta," " Her builders," " The directors," "The captain," &c., woro most enthusiastically drank, and tho steamer having onco again reached tho Queen-street "Whnrf, tho company dispersed highly pleased. and e-tisfied "with tho day's trip, and wo can only repeat their last words, " Success to the Waitemata and her spirited directors.'' ARRIVAL OF THE BARQUE ISABEL GUZMAN, FROM CHILI. Tho leitel Guznan, Chilian barque, 300 tons, Capt. Harraran, left Tjme on the Chilian coast on tho Bth January, and had line weather until arriving near New Zealand She made tho Mayor Island on the 20 th instant, in a galo of wind from tho N.E., during which slio lost her jib, flying jib, foresail, main trysail and topsail, and her toi gallant sails, besides having her bulwarks stove in and springing a leak, which for the first twenty-four hours after could not bo gained on, although tho pumps wore going incessantly, tho ship making nearly 2 feet water per ho ur. Sho arrived yesterday morning, and had five feet water in; her hold when she came in. Sho brings 10,000 bugs flour, 325 do. wheat, 227 do. walnuts, 150 do. beurig, and is consigned to Stone and Son.
