QUEEN'S REDOUBT.
[FROM our OWN CORRESPONDENT. "] August 4. T paid a visit to AVhangamar'no lust Sundav, and, nn fortunately for myself, took for my route the new 'ramwav, and several times endangered rr.v I'cek, -•rossing over frail pinnies: Tint the same tramway locs great credit to the brain that conceived it, and thi! Government that put it into execution, for it will 'nfiku tlie country through winch it passes, at least, four times more valuable than if limy had adhered to the old path, for road it cannot l>o called. There is one strip on the old road alter crossing Muungatawhi'i hridge, about 500 yards, positively dangerous to travel even in broad daylight. There has been a row about driulc having been sold in some of the stores here, and one of the storekeepers has had an interdict put upon his house, a district order having been promulgated ' prohibiting any soldier whatevor from entering it. I believe that there will shortly be a new regulation affecting canteens and stores, as the Commanding Officer hero has been in communication with the . General on the subeect. I don't thinl; the prohibitory svstein answers the purpose of keeping down drunkenness, for in those station** where public houses are allowed, there is a less percentage of drunkenness -than whoro it is entirely prohibited." ■
