GRAND FETE AND PUBLIC BALL, AT THORNDON.
As the plan of the principal town in the New Zealand Land Company's first settlement will be ready for public inspection in less than two months from this date, (the day to be hereafter appointed by the SurveyorGeneral;) it is proposed, — Firstly, — That a public meeting be held at Thorndon, on the morning of the same day, at eleven o'clock, to inspect the SurveyorGeneral's plan, and to determine on the future name to be given to the town, as well as on other important matters, in which the whole Colony is deeply interested. Secondly, — That the day be celebrated by a public fete and general rejoicing, to be conducted in such a manner as to give satisfaction to all classes of the community. To promote which desirable object, it is further proposed, — Thirdly, — That a voluntary subscription be entered into forthwith by all gentlemen in the Colony, anxious to lend their aid in contributing to the general amusement on this most / interesting occasion ; and also, that a Com-] mittee, consisting of 1 J. scription list lying open for signatures at their 1 respective houses until the last day of this month, by which time it will be ascertained if there be sufficient funds to enable them to
present to the public a very extensive programme of amusements already in contemplation, but which cannot be detailed, until the amount of subscription is made known. To " conclude with a public ball, at Barrett's Hotel, at which each subscriber of two pounds will be entitled to introduce as many ladies as he may think fit.
