The news has just been received of the death from pneumonia, of Miss Mildred Carey-Wallace, private secretary to Mr C. N. Baevertz. Miss Wallace was- in Wellington quite recently and left by the Atua for Sydney, where she must have/ contracted the malady. She was on her way to England along with Baeyert-z anddied at sea and was Buried in Samoa. Miss Carey-Wallace was an exceptionally gifted girl; she played the piano with temperament and feeling, and composed songs and music.

Computed that the estates of two wealthy citizens lately deceased 'will yied revenue to the Government in the shape of death duties at the rate of nearly £60,000. The late Mr Hamilton GiT.taer's estate has been sworn at about- £300,000, the duty' on whi'oh is at the rate of 17 per cent.
