Apropos of the municipal elections an attempt is to be made to "capture" the civic government of Wellington and other towns by a party, a. large proportion of whose members are avowed enemies of society as at present constituted, and some of whom are open and declared: enemies of what the community understands as law and order. It behoyes, therefore, every citizen who desires to protect his home, and his property, to see to it without the slightest delay, that Jus or her name is on the municipal roll. To combat the forces of social and industrial disorder every available vote will be wanted. Collective or individual apathy on the part of the ratepayers would just now be akin to madness. The supplementary list of the Wellington municipal roll is now being prepared and will close on April Ist. Names omitter from the main roll may now be added to this supplementary list. ■55- * ■* * The waistcoat is still to provide us (writes a Melbourne, correspondent in a chatty little note about coming fashions) with a link between the much beloved masculine _ attire and 'our own beastly skirts this coming winter. Waistcoats in all colours of the rainbow are promised us, and we shudder to think of some of the fearful travesties that will descend upon us. Imagine Mrs Fatneck, weighing 18 stone, in a green garment, with purple stripes, running round and round her 56-inch waist measurement. Another little itenh that we may look for is the fob, which we inherited from our greatgrandfather, and which he wore on his capacious inner garment. Waistcoats of leather, and doe-skin, and rabbitskin, and the skin of the cat that walks the wall at night, and any oT,her animal we cease to care for, may be brought into the market, and made up for a- vest for mother or sister or any little flapper who does the Block. * * To-day (Thursday) and to-morraw are Surprise Packet Days in Wellington. The Wellington Commercial Travellers are organisers of the campaign, which is in aid of the dependants of men in the Mercantile Marine who have suffered through the ravages of the Hun. The Wellington Commercial Travellers are ever to the fore on behalf of a worthy cause and they threaten' to smash all previous records in their efforts for the Mercantile Marine to-day and to-morrow. They have prepared 100,000 Surprise Packets, which they are selling at a shilling each. There is a wonderful quantity of prizes and there are no blank packets. See that you buy as many Surprise Packets as you can afford and assist the good cause.
