On Aeroplanes.

(For the N.Z. Free Lance.) O'erhead they are soaring, Like birds in the sky; Where cannons are roaring They circle and fly. Swift winged as the swallow, They're cleaving the air. O'er mountain and hollow The battle to share. With bombs well provided, And youth at the helm, They've side-tracked, and glided Our foes to o'erwhelm. The eyes of our army, They hunt the Hun 'planes When weather is balmy, And, too, when it rains. To deadly adventure Still gaily they go ; To hell they would venture To seek out a foe. It may be the death blow Shall German homes From our aerodromes. At hands of the airmen May wreaths, woven of glory, Those brave pilots crown. Who on scenes grim and gory In danger, look down. — J. C- Thomson.
