Cricket.

By, Touchlina,

A Short Review. NOTHER season of cricket is oyer and done with, arid the war is still with us. Some people expressed the opinion that sports of all sorts should have been suspended for the .time being, but I cannot agree with; them.„ As long as the sportsmen are. doing, their duty and answering their country's call, I claim that it is : the right thing for the game of cricket to be played. When I make the statement- that there was not a first division man eligible for service playing in Wellington last season it will be conceded that-these- fellows were showing. 110' disrespect to their comrades in the fighting line by indulging in their favourite pastime of a- Saturday afternoon. The play in the senior championship right through the cricket year has been interesting arid pleasant, and, the players can stow away their gear till next summer comes round with no regrets. - Let's hope, by that time tliirigs will be back to normal in this old _wOrld of ours. ■ There have been ~ a few outstanding performances during the year,- and a couple of records have been disturbed. Generally speaking, however. things have gone along smoothly.. The East team, in winning the championship, have repeated their performance of the previous year, the only-side to defeat , them being North, the run-ners-up. - ' , In accordance with my' custom, I' have compiled the batting and bowling averages for the year., ' J. S. Hiddleston (North) heads the batting list, with F. A. Midlane (East) and E. M. Beechev (Old Boys) next in order. The last-named , is the only batsman; who has totalled over 500 runs for the season, and is also the only one who lias scored two centuries. _ Among new names well up in the batting order are-: J. A. Bruce, J. W. Condliffe, B. J. Tuckwell, P. C. Dwver,' and A. R. Barker. Amongst the boilers; K. H. Tucker and C. W. Robinson are,at the head of the list, albeit neither of them has played in many matches. W.- Gflrrod (Boys' Institute) has done more than well for his first season as a seriior player; and has almost the same average as J. Hutchings (East). This player has had a wonderful season with the ball, his aggregate being the largest (61 wickets), and his average the best of — those, playing regularly.' W. S. Brice (Petone) also occupies a good position." J. Hutchings (61). W. S. .Brice (56), J. S. Hiddleston (54). and W. R. Gibbes (50) are the bowlers who have taken 50 wickets and over for the season. ,« ■ .; » « © Batting and Bowling Averages. - In the tables, published hereunder only those batsxnen who have averaged ten runs and over per innings, and the bowlers who have taken'six or more wickets, aTe included. If the figures /of any players not; mentioned in these lists are required by the individuals themselves I will be'only too pleased to supply them, as I have them by me. The figures herewith are reliable, as they have been made up from the score-books of the various clubs, and in this connection- I have to thank the secretaries for their courtesies in placing their books at my disposal right through the season.. The riiajorit-v of the- score-books - have been splendidly kept, especially those by Mr. W. Martin (Old Boys) and Mr. W. S. Hood (East), who have been found regularly in their places-right through the year. With v this preamble I give the figures: —

Keys took . the wliolj? ten wickets in one- innings, the first time, such a performance has been done in senior cricket in Wellington. Nine wickets have been taken several®

times, viz.. by E. F. TTpkani (twice), H\ Tucker (twice)/ C. Benbow, F. 1 Holdsworth, C. E. Hickey; W. B. Gibbes, AY. S. Brice. C. W. Robinson^" and J. Hutcliings.. , . Arthur Feuton, of the University team, has done the- hat trick —three •' wickets with, succ-esssive balls—three times this season."' This'is a new records for Wellington cricket—as a matter of fact, as far as I ean gather, local bowlers have _ rarely .done the hat trick. My information on this heading may not' be reliable, but the only others besides- , Fenton who have performed this feat are K- H. Tucker, C. E. Hickey, and ■"VY. R. Gibbes. But I quite believ& there may be others, and any information on this head will be acceptable. ® «■ Winners of Championship. This list- is published by... request.
