Yachting Notes.

By a kipper.

A very fine north-west breeze favoured the boating men last Saturday. Two ©vents were got off by the Port JSicholeon Yacht Club. A first-class race, for .which the Bona, Viola, GalateaC Windward, lolanthe, Muritai, Wairere, and White Wings entered, but the lastmamed did not start. The Sona got away with a fine slant, and led the field to Jerningham. The Wairere hung up under the wharf and spoilt her chance of getting even with the leaders. Once round the buoy the big cutter reached the northern buoy in one board. The Windward was better sailed than usual, and made a good showing. The Wairere seemed unable to carry her full sail and sagged to leeward of the fleet. On the run home the Wairere improved her position a little, but not enough to affect the result. The Rona again passed the post first and added 12 points to her aggregate. She, however, was giving the placed boats too much time and suffered defeat by some four or five minutes. The winner turned up in the Windward, the lolanthe being second, and the consistent Viola third. The second-class race brought out only three starters: Bawene (scratch), Nancy Stairs (smin), and Lizzie j(l2min). The scratch boat led the field, and made a splendid leg to Korokoro buoy. She had the misfortune to split iher mainsail when holding a good position. This necessitated the taking in of a reef which her some six minutes. The Nancy Stair, with a full mainsail, did some fine work, and_ held her place throughout. She finished

just behind the Rawene, but the Lizzie, in receipt of 12 minutes, annexed the trophy, the Nancy being second, and the scratch boat third. Six launches of the Motor Boat Glub took part in a relay race, the event being won by the A team: Some amusement was afforded the spectators - on the wharf by the efforts of some of the launches to obtain the flag from their predecessors before they started on their journey round -the course. Several launches and yachts have been getting good boxes of terakihi and blue cod lately. A party of three have chartered a large launch at Picton for a threeweeks' cruise in the Sounds. «• a & » The following is a propos of a par which appeared in this column the issue before last: — Dear Free Lance, —The . secretary, P.N.Y.C., exceedingly regrets "Skipper's" inability to "make out" the events, as posted in club's notice board, but is at a loss regarding the precise nature of "Skipper's" complaint. Seeing that he is the only one who has experienced trouble in this direction, one is almost tempted, to believe that he has become affected with the malady, which, according to himself, is so prevalent among the soldiers at the forts, who threaten to fire so indiscriminately at motor-yachtsmen. The secretary, P.N.Y.C., " would be obliged to "Skipper" if he would justify his statements made in your last issue.—Yours, etc.. J. L. Helgesen. Hon. Sec., P.N.Y.C. February 22, 1916. a- © «• » If the secretary of the P.N.Y.C.. will send me along the programme I will get it typed for him._ I never write anything but what is fair and just, and regret he has taken the matter so much to heart.
