WELLINGTON AND ITS SUBURBS.

The Transit Question. EVERY Wellington ratepayer who is interested in the progress of the city has, we hope, read the extremely interesting statement made to a press reporter by Mayor Luke, There can be no two opinions as to the urgent necessity of most, if not all, the works outlined by Mr. Luke in the interview. Especially important is the desirableness of making a new and speedier connection with Karori by a new line, which would tap the now very large and ever-increasing population of Kelburn. Mr. Luke makes it clear that the city could be much better served by a new line than by acquiring the Kel-bur-Karori cable tram, and not only that, but the cost would be much less. * * * * Whether it would be better to run a lift up Church-street to communicate with a new line along Salamanca-road, and so on, through Kelburn, to the Karori Tunnel, or to make the connecting link start at St. Peter's Church, and go by way of Ghuznee-street and Mount-street (the short street connecting the Terrace with Salamanca-road) we are not prepared to say, although if the first scheme be feasible, we are rather inclined to favour its adoption. * * * # But it is clear something should and must be done to cater for the transit requirements of the Kelburn people. There can be no question as to the line paying, and if, as Mr. Luke seems to think possible, the requisite money can be got at 5 per cent., we cordially agree with him that the work should be undertaken without further delay. Other proposals, in connection with Hataitai, Roseneath, and Kilbirnie, and with regard to a motor 'bus service along the water front, as outlined by Mr. Luke, shew that he is imbued with a spirit of progressiveness, and is intent upon keeping the Empire Citv abreast of the times.
