Hockey Notes.

By Bully-off

KARORI are still on top, so far as the local senior hockey championship is concerned. Last Saturday, however, they very nearly went under to St. Augustine's. They can t.kanlr their lucky stard that the balance of goals (4—3) was in their favour.

It was hard luck for the Petone boys who constitute the St. Augustine's team. This is their first season in firstplass company, and, judging by their showing so far, it won't be their last. The Karori score was cut up between Heapy, Loader, Stratton, and Pell. Taylor. and Webley contributed the other three goals. In the other two senior games University beat Rambler by 4 goals to 1, and Wellington ran up 6 goals to 1 against Insurance. The scores speak for themselves. United had a bye. * * » <* The girls' senior games" have been, played out to a finish, and University are the champion team for 1915. The next best two teams. Rambler A and Girls' College, had a close tussle on Saturday, and, when time was called,, they had scored a goal aoieoe. In view of the coming interprovincial tournament, trial matches will now beplayed before the Wellington representative eleven is selected. Two sides have been chosen, and these will meet on Saturday. The tournament commences about the beginning of next month. * * * «• The surprise packet in Auckland hockey last Saturday was the drubbing inflicted on Auckland by University. The 'Varsity boys are 'leading for the senior championship, and two or three weeks ago Auckland came right out of their shell and beat- them by a single eoal. They met again on Saturday, and this time Auckland went down, with a bump. The final score was : University 8, Auckland 1. University now have a clear lead of four points for the championship. In the second senior contest in the Queen City, Areta defeated Mount Eden (leading for the wooden spoon) by 3 goals to 2. * * * * The finals for the senior championship were played off in Christchurcji last Saturday, between Sydenham A and' Selwyn. Sydenham were leading for the premiership bv ihalf-a-point, so Selwyn required a straight-out win, to erain the laurels. In this they did not succeed. Sydenham .triumphing by 2 goals to nil. A. strange feature of the Christchurch senior inter-club contests is that Adcliington, the lowest team on the championship ladder, have succeeded in defeating every other team in the competition.
