PLENTY OUT OF REACH.

Wellington Cut Off and Cast Out. ATTENTION has been called in -the Chamber of Commerce' to the fact that the capital has no steamer connection with the Bay of Plenty.- Representations have been made to the firms that might reasonably establish such a service; but the representations have been without effect. . And so whatever Wellington might do with that important and rising district is diverted to other centres. The matter is a small one, but it is significant. It points the fact that our' communications are still far from perfect. It is a. manifest absurdity that the capital city of a country should have no steam communication with an important and a rising district on the coast; but in New Zealand -there are many such absurdities. Even the postal service is . still rich in anomalies. You can. get postal notes payable in England; but you cannot get' postal notes payable in Australia. It costs more to send a parcel to Sydney by parcels post than it costs to send a similar parcel to New York. Little things like this are kinks in civilisation, and they should be straightened out.
