NEW ZEALAND A BAD FOURTH.

Added Proof of the Short Life of Dreadnoughts. HM.S. New Zealand is still a baby, in years, and she is still not t>aid for'; but it seems that she is already outclassed. "The other day she raced in the; English Channel with, the Lion, the Queen Mary, and the Princess Royal, and she came in a bad fourth. It seems perfectly possible' that in another year or so the New Zealand may be virtually obsolete. From, which fact the ordinary man may deduce something relative t-o the terrific cost of modern armaments. A ship like the New Zealand costs two millions. The 'expense of her upkeep is prodigious. And in a very short time, even in times of peace,- she is whipped and done with. It is necessary to keep prepared for war • but even preparedness for war is a dreadfully expensive and senseless business.
