THE PETTED PUGILIST

Why Carpentier Doesn't Think He'll Come. THE French pugilist Carpentier will not visit Australia,,, because he doesn't think the men he'd be likely to meet on that insignficant island would be able to extend him—able to teach bim anything, to increase his fame, to improve his form. Carpentier is probably quite right in that, although Australia doesn't care to have it put so bluntly. Carpentier, while still a boy, is at the forefront of the bruiser's trade. He is, all things considered, a nice boy, and he has brains. He does well -to make the best possible use he can of his time while nerve and muscle last. Not only that, but where he is he is somebody. Dames of high lineage pet and ' make much of him. Girls of the people ' adore and fondle him. Every athlete in France looks up to him. All the sweets of the game are his. Why should he banish himself for five months to what must apoear to him to be a most remote and impossible island?
